Pro-Trump Trucks Tried Running Biden Bus ‘Off The Road,’ Campaign Says

Topline

A pro-Trump convoy of cars and trucks – possibly encouraged by Donald Trump Jr. – apparently targeted a Biden campaign bus carrying a number of top Texas Democratic candidates and a vehicle altercation followed, leading Democrats to cancel the bus tour.

Key Facts

Texas state legislator Sheryl Cole announced the cancelation of a joint event with the Biden campaign bus and the Austin Young Democrats in Texas for “security reasons,” accusing the Trump supporters of having “escalated well beyond safe limits.”

Cole cited Travis County Democratic Party Chair Katie Naranjo, who alleged the Trump supporters “followed the Biden bus throughout central Texas” and “ran into a person’s car, yelling curse words and threats,” along with photos of a damaged car, while Texas State Rep. Rafael Anchía tweeted the Trump supporters were “armed” and were “ramming volunteer vehicles & blocking traffic for 40 mins.”

Numerous videos posted to social media show a half dozen trucks sporting pro-Trump flags and decals surrounding a Trump bus and an accompanying white SUV, with one video posted by a Biden campaign volunteer showing a truck ramming the SUV on the side as it attempted to regain its place behind the bus.

A Biden campaign spokesperson told Forbes the trucks “attempted to slow the bus down and run it off the road,” that local law enforcement was called in to help the bus reach its destination and offboard passengers and that an event at the Texas AFL-CIO was canceled out of an “abundance of caution.”

The bus was carrying several prominent local Democrats, including Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Tex.), U.S. House candidate and former Texas state lawmaker Wendy Davis, according to reports from myCanyonLake and CBS Austin.

Forbes has reached out to the Trump campaign, the Texas Department of Public Safety and a representative for the local Trump Train group for comment.

Key Background

Democratic vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris – who was not on the bus – made three stops in Texas the same day the incident occurred and was met by Trump supporters during her visit. Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke of Texas, who campaigned with Harris, was also heckled by Trump supporters, who he called “a––holes with their louds horns.”

Crucial Quote

“Hey Laredo, Don Jr. here. I heard you had an awesome turnout for the Trump Train,” Donald Trump Jr., son of President Donald Trump, said in a video tweeted by Daily Caller contributor Kambree Kawahine Koa. “It would be great if you guys would all get together, head down to McAllen and give Kamala Harris a nice Trump Train welcome… let’s show them how strong Texas still is as Trump country.”

Chief Critic

“Rather than engage in productive conversation about the drastically different visions that Joe Biden and Donald Trump have for our country, Trump supporters in Texas today instead decided to put our staff, surrogates, supporters, and others in harm’s way,” the Biden campaign’s Texas Communications Director Tariq Thowfeek told Forbes in a statement. “Our supporters will continue to organize their communities for Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and Democrats up and down the ballot, and to the Texans who disrupted our events today: We’ll see you on November 3rd.”

Big Number

1 point. That’s the size of Trump’s lead in Texas in the FiveThirtyEight polling average. The state has been hotly competitive this year, despite Trump winning it by 9 points in 2016, with the Biden campaign sending Harris, as well as Jill Biden and Harris’ husband Doug Emhoff, to campaign there.
