Protesters flooded the streets of at least 33 cities across the country on Friday in response to the death of George Floyd, producing images of a country pushed to a breaking point over racial justice, sky high unemployment and a virus outbreak.

Protesters demonstrated in Boston, New York City, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Minneapolis, Louisville, Dallas, Sacramento, and San Jose — among others — in violent clashes with the police.

Fires raged again and looting escalated in Minneapolis, despite efforts by the state and local officials to regain order; on Saturday, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said the state would deploy another 1,000 soldiers to quell possible protests that could occur over the weekend.

Thousands of demonstrators surrounded the perimeter of the Barclays Center on Friday night, some throwing bottles and other debris at police officers; two police vehicles were vandalized and an abandoned police van was set on fire.

The Guard was ordered to remain on standby in Washington, D.C., where protesters hopped barriers erected by Secret Service agents near the White House and hurled bottles at police officers who responded with pepper spray.

In Atlanta, the Guard was also summoned after protesters vandalized and broke the windows of CNN’s headquarters, as well as other buildings, while setting fires to police cars.
