Quibi Will Cease Service Dec. 1

After the announcement earlier this week that short form-streaming platform Quibi was calling it quits, the company has now declared its last day of service to be Dec. 1. Additionally, the mobile-subscription platform has provided no certainty about future access to its original content once its operations cease.

That’s according to the Los Angeles-based startup’s customer-support site, which stated in a message “At this time we do not know if the Quibi content will be available anywhere after our last day of service.” For news regarding its content, users were urged to follow the company’s Twitter site.

Led by ex-movie mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg and CEO Meg Whitman, Quibi launched in April and specialized in five-to-ten minute “quick bites” of content. Its goal was to be the app of choice for “those on the go.”

But viewers, stuck at home in the middle of a pandemic, found themselves watching Netflix and other streaming services like Disney+, HBOMax, Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

Throughout its two-year evolution, Quibi had aimed its sights at some of Tinseltown’s biggest talent including Kevin Hart, Chrissy Teigen and Dwayne Johnson. Its model allowed creators to own the non-mobile rights to content it funded.

Ultimately, the streaming platform’s content inventory included 120 reality series, news, sports, and films broken down into short chapters. More than 50 original shows were promoted at its launch. Katzenberg said the service spent $1.1 billion on content in the first year, consuming investment from the likes of Walt Disney, NBCUniversal and Warner Media.

Now, the company has no clear answer as to what will become of the dozens of original shows it has licensed from the range of media companies and Hollywood A-listers.
