Rainbow7 Pull Off Major Upset Against LGD Gaming At ‘League Of Legends’ World Championship

Latin American team Rainbow7 has pulled off the biggest upset of the League of Legends World Championship so far by taking down Chinese team LGD Gaming in the play in stage.

Rainbow7 was expected to be one of the teams that would struggle on the world championship stage, coming from a region with a lower quality of play overall and little experience on the international stage. However, they have just taken down one of the biggest teams in the play in stage, and are keeping their hopes of a main event spot alive.

Day one was one to forget for Rainbow7, losing to PSG Talon in their opening match of the tournament when PSG was playing with a number of substitute players due to travel issues. Day two didn’t get any better, as Rainbow7 also fell to V3 Esports in the first match of the day and with a 0-2 record making it out of the group stage seemed unlikely, especially with LGD Gaming and Unicorns of Love still to play.

LGD Gaming came into the play in stage as one of the favourites to advance to the main event. The fourth seed from China has the advantage of playing in their home country, and have looked impressive during the LPL season. Qualification for the main event was almost seen as a formality for a team of this quality.

But they too stumbled on day one, also losing to PSG Talon who look like one of the strongest teams in the group despite the makeshift roster. But a match against Rainbow7 seemed like the perfect way to bounce back and get their Worlds journey off to a better start.

The match started off like most of the other matches at Worlds so far, with no massive advantage going either way. But then out of nowhere Rainbow7 started taking and winning big 5v5 fights. They kept happening, usually around the dragon, and Rainbow7 kept winning the fights. Eventually, Rainbow7 were just too strong, and took down the LGD base to pull off one of the biggest upsets we are likely to see at Worlds this year.

Now with a 1-2 record Rainbow7 still has a chance at qualifying for the knockout stage, while LGD will need to pick up some wins if they are to have a chance of making the main event. The play in stage of Worlds is not even two days old yet, but already it is providing some epic moments.
