Regina King’s Fourth Emmy: Lead Actress In A Limited Series Or Movie For ‘Watchmen’

Watchmen star Regina King has won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her role in the HBO comic book adaptation Watchmen at Sunday’s virtual ceremony.

King won for her role as Angela Abar, aka masked detective Sister Night, beating out fellow nominees Cate Blanchett (Mrs. America), Kerry Washington (Little Fires Everywhere‘), Octavia Spencer (Madam C.J. Walker) and Shira Haas (Unorthodox). Watchmen has hauled in a total of eight Emmys so far out of 26 nominations, including awards for best cinematography, editing and costumes.

This marks the fourth Emmy win overall for King, who won in this category in 2018 for her lead role in Netflix’s
NFLX
Seven Seconds and took home a pair of trophies for her work on ABC’s American Crime. King is an Oscar winner as well, with a win last year for Best Supporting Actress for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk.

King also ties the record with Alfre Woodard for most acting Emmys won by a Black performer. Woodard has earned 17 Primetime Emmy nominations, won in 1984, 1987, 1997 and 2003. These recognitions were in the supporting actress in a drama series category for Hill Street Blues, guest performer in a drama series for L.A. Law, lead actress in a miniseries or special for Miss Evers’ Boys and guest actress for The Practice.
