Report: Disney+ Overtakes Netflix As Top Streaming App In 2020

Streaming has become the world’s main source of entertainment during the coronavirus pandemic. And according to a new report, Disney+ has entered the picture in spectacular fashion.

That report—from a joint partnership between mobile intelligence company Apptopia and customer engagement platform Braze—showed that Disney+ has accrued 14.1 million downloads in the United States in 2020. That was the most of any streaming app, including Netflix (which has had 11.9 million downloads in 2020), Hulu (8.1 million) and YouTube (7.9 million).

Here are the top ten downloaded streaming apps in the United States in 2020, according to the report:

  1. Disney+ (14.1 million downloads)
  2. Netflix (11.9 million downloads)
  3. Hulu (8.1 million downloads)
  4. YouTube (7.9 million downloads)
  5. Amazon Prime Video (6.4 million downloads)
  6. Tubi (5.6 million downloads)
  7. Roku (4.8 million downloads)
  8. YouTube Kids (3.6 million downloads)
  9. Twitch (3.2 million downloads)
  10. Pluto TV (2.6 million downloads)

As the report notes, Disney+ overtaking Netflix is a feat no other competitor has ever accomplished.

Netflix however—due to its ubiquity—dominated the worldwide rankings by quite a large margin. Internationally, the streaming giant accrued 59.1 million downloads, which outpaced the second place YouTube by nearly 20 million. Disney+—which currently has limited available on a global scale—was down in seventh place with 17.5 million downloads.

Here are the worldwide rankings broken down:

  1. Netflix (59.1 million downloads)
  2. YouTube (39.4 million downloads)
  3. Amazon Prime Video (27.1 million downloads)
  4. YouTube Kids (24.6 million downloads)
  5. Hotstar (21.2 million downloads)
  6. BIGO LIVE (20.9 million downloads)
  7. Disney+ (17.5 million downloads)
  8. Twitch (12.4 million downloads)
  9. Xigua Video (11.6 million downloads)
  10. Tubi (10 million downloads)

It should be no surprise that YouTube dominates the rankings for most in-app purchases, as the streaming giant has collected $60 million domestically from in-app purchases this year and $110 million internationally.

In this category, we once again saw Disney+ top Netflix domestically in this category, but lose out internationally. While Netflix finished ahead of Disney+ globally with $68 million in in-app revenue, Disney+ topped Netflix in the U.S. with $48.5 million.

Here are the domestic in-app revenue rankings broken down:

  1. YouTube ($60 million)
  2. Disney+ ($48.5 million)
  3. Netflix ($30.1 million)
  4. Hulu ($23.5 million)
  5. HBO NOW ($17.4 million)
  6. BIGO LIVE ($14.3 million)
  7. Twitch ($12.5 million)
  8. STARZ ($10.8 million)
  9. Crunchyroll ($5.9 million)
  10. CBS ($4.7 million)

And here are the international rankings:

  1. YouTube ($110 million)
  2. Netflix ($68 million)
  3. Tencent Video ($63.3 million)
  4. Disney+ ($61.2 million)
  5. BIGO LIVE ($40.2 million)
  6. Youku ($34.2 million)
  7. Hulu ($23.5 million)
  8. Twitch ($19.9 million)
  9. HBO NOW ($17.4 million)
  10. STARZ ($10.8 million)

And when it comes to time spent on a streaming app, YouTube Kids actually dominates the list—both domestically and internationally. Netflix finishes in second place for both the domestic and global rankings, ahead of Disney+ in both cases.
