Republicans Bash Democrats: ‘If You Can Protest In Person, You Can Vote In Person’

TOPLINE

As President Trump continues to attack the integrity of mail-in voting ahead of the 2020 election, some Republicans are criticizing Democrats as hypocritical for crowding together in protests but refusing to hit the polls in-person.

KEY FACTS

A photo retweeted by the president on Monday which was billed as showing crowds of “Seattle Democrats [gathering] to demand mail-in voting because it’s too dangerous to vote in-person” was quickly used as fodder against Democrats demanding increased support for mail-in voting.

“If you can protest in person, you can vote in person,” wrote Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) on Twitter of the photo that Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan has since clarified was taken in June at a Black Lives Matter protest, not a mail-in voting rally.

Other Republicans on Twitter, including Trump 2020 strategic advisor Boris Epshteyn and several other Trump team members, also weighed in, with Epshteyn asking: “So they can protest in person but can’t vote in person?”

Former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik commented on a Washington Post-shared video of a demonstration in Washington, D.C., against the White House’s opposition to voting by mail, saying: “People can walk side-by-side, on top of each other,  but they cannot go vote and are left to corrupt voting by mail.”

The video was also criticized by other high-profile conservative personalities, including Dana Loesch, a former National Rifle Association spokeswoman and Breitbart Editor

Key Background

Trump has levied various attacks against mail-in voting in recent weeks, claiming without evidence that mail-in voting would result in widespread election fraud: “It’s going to make our country the laughingstock of the world.” On the other side of the aisle, Democrats are lobbying for ease of voting amid the pandemic and expressing rising concern about the state of the U.S. Postal Service. Following backlash to widespread delays in mail delivery caused by operational changes that Democrats worried would impact the election, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy agreed on Tuesday to halt them until after the election.

Crucial Quote

Top infectious diseases expert Dr. Anthony Fauci last week endorsed the safety of in-person voting, saying: “I think if carefully done, according to the guidelines, there’s no reason why” people shouldn’t be able to vote in-person. “Compromised” individuals at a higher risk of infection should vote by mail, however, said Fauci.
