Roddy Ricch’s ‘The Box’ Has Already Been Streamed One Billion Times In The U.S. This Year

Roddy Ricch’s smash “The Box” may not be in charge of the Hot 100 any longer (it has stepped aside to allow The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” to control the tally), but it still stands as the biggest hit of the year. In fact, when it comes to streaming platforms, where the tune has been performing spectacularly for months now, no other track comes even close to racking up as many plays as the hip-hop talent’s first major win on the charts.

According to data published by HitsDailyDouble, “The Box” has now been played over one billion times in the United States in 2020 alone. That’s an incredible sum for any track in any period of time, and it’s almost difficult to believe that any single piece of music can be streamed that many times in just a few months in one country, even if it is the biggest in the world when it comes to music.

The site claims that between on-demand audio platforms and on-demand video sites, “The Box” has now been played 1,085,411,000 times. That sum is by far the biggest of the year, and it will be interesting to see if any song can catch up in the coming months, or perhaps even by the end of 2020.

Future and Drake’s “Life Is Good” lands in the runner-up rung, but it’s a very distant second place. The tune missed out on reaching the half-billion-play mark by only a few million (which would be huge for most acts, but which is just another day of streaming activity for those two musicians). Every other tune is behind “The Box” by at least 500 million streams.

“The Box” led the charge on the Hot 100 for 11 weeks this year, and the entire time it was powered primarily by massive stream counts. The single did reach the top 10 on the Radio Songs and Digital Song Sales charts, but it relied heavily on plays on sites like Spotify and Apple Music to keep it in charge of the most competitive ranking in the U.S.
