Romney Rebukes Marjorie Taylor Greene And Trump: ‘Lies Of A Feather Flock Together’

Topline

Republican Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah denounced Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) Saturday for spreading “nonsense” about the 2020 presidential election being stolen from Donald Trump, after Greene bragged that she had secured the former president’s support.

Key Facts

In response to a post by Greene in which she claimed she had a “GREAT” phone call with Trump, Romney tweeted: “Lies of a feather flock together: Marjorie Taylor Greene’s nonsense and the ‘big lie’ of a stolen election.

In a series of tweets Saturday, Greene asserted that “You can never beat [Trump]” because “We The People have his back,” even though President Biden defeated Trump in the 2020 election.

Greene went on to declare she would “never apologize” and “will never back down and will stand up against the never-ending bloodthirsty mob.”

Key Background:

Emerging proof of Greene’s espousal of pernicious conspiracy theories has recently made headlines nationwide. On Wednesday, a video surfaced of Greene aggressively confronting Parkland school shooting survivor David Hogg in 2019. The following day, a 2018 Facebook post was discovered in which Greene blamed a destructive wildfire in California on a laser beam fired from space that was controlled by a prominent Jewish banking family with connections to powerful Democrats. The New York Times reported Friday on a 40-minute video that was initially posted to YouTube in 2018 in which Greene questions whether a plane flew into the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001, asserts that President Barack Obama was secretly Muslim, and suggests that John F. Kennedy Jr.’s was assassinated because he was a potential political rival of Hillary Clinton. Before being elected to Congress, Greene often endorsed executing top Democratic politicians on social media, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former President Barack Obama. After one Facebook follower asked her, “Now do we get to hang them,” in reference to Obama and Clinton, Greene responded: “Stage is being set. Players are being put in place. We must be patient. This must be done perfectly or liberal judges would let them off.” Romney, who often clashed publicly with Trump and blamed him for inciting the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, is the first prominent Republican to admonish Greene publicly.

What To Watch For:

Greene’s decision to dig in and her refusal to apologize will only cause further problems for GOP leadership, who have refused to censure her thus far. Several Democrat lawmakers and activists have called for her removal from the House Education Committee and Congress. Republican Leader in the House of Representatives, Rep Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif), has not yet addressed Greene’s comments or conduct.
