UNDERCARD:

Robeisy Ramirez (3-1, 3 KOs) TKO1 vs. Yeuri Andujar (5-4): You might recall that Ramirez, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, got knocked down in the first round of his pro debut last year and lost a split decision Adan Gonzalez. It was downright shocking. But coming into tonight’s fight, he’d won two-straight by knockout, and he got a national TV spot to try to prove that his first fight was a fluke. And thus, in the first round, Ramirez floored Andujar 30 seconds into the bout, and about 20 seconds later, Ramirez finished him. So, that’s that.

Shakur Stevenson vs. Felix Caraballo odds

According to oddsmakers, none of the fights on this card should be competitive. Here are the odds for four of the fights tonight.

  • Shakur Stevenson (-5000) vs. Felix Caraballo (+1900)
  • Jared Anderson (-4500) vs. Johnnie Langston (+1650)
  • Guido Vianella (-4500) vs. Don Haynesworth (+1700)
  • Robiesy Ramriez (-2400) vs. Yeuri Andujar (+1120)

Not even putting together a three-fight parlay will help make you much money.

If you’d like to have the chance to win a little more money on a Stevenson victory, he’s -420 to win by KO/TKO or +300 to win by decision. Meanwhile, Caraballo is +5000 to win by decision and +3100 to win by KO/TKO. A draw is listed at +3300.

Here are the other purses reported via the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Shakur Stevenson vs. Felix Caraballo prediction

It’s a shame Stevenson can’t fight his original opponent, Miguel Marriaga, a solid veteran who would probably have been Stevenson’s toughest opponent yet. But considering we’re still in a pandemic, Caraballo will simply have to do for now. Stevenson hasn’t been known as a knockout puncher during his three-year career, but I think it’ll come tonight against a fighter who’s making a huge leap up in class. Say, Stevenson by KO in the fifth round.

Preview: Top Rank’s Bob Arum is hoping that his boxing shows on ESPN in June and July can capture the American sports fans’ imagination while most other major sports are still on hiatus because of the pandemic. Shakur Stevenson, who fights Felix Caraballo tonight, headlines the first major boxing card since March. And boxing fans are ready for a live sports diversion.

“In this two-month period in June or July, where it looks like there won’t be any NBA, any Major League Baseball, the spotlight will be on the sport of boxing, and with bouts that we’ve lined up, I believe that the public will once again be enthused about the competitive level in the sport,” said Arum, the CEO of Top Rank.

Stevenson vs. Caraballo isn’t expected to be competitive. Stevenson (13-0, 7 KOs) is a 126-pound featherweight world titlist who’s moving up four pounds to fight at junior lightweight, and he’s one of the best young fighters in the sport. Caraballo (13-1-2, 9 KOs) is basically unknown. But he said Stevenson should beware of him, anyway.

“I’m going to get this great opportunity and I’m going to give it my all, and I know that if we win, we could open all the doors, we could have more fights and better fights,” Caraballo said.

The odds say he won’t win, and in reality, Stevenson should dominate this bout. But it’s live boxing, and for now, that’ll have to be good enough.

Either way, I’ll be here for the night, giving my round-by-round thoughts, explanations and unofficial scoring on the ESPN card that will begin at 7 p.m. ET.
