Storylines Intensify In Milestone 100th Episode Of ‘Chicago Med,’ Say EPs

In this age of Peak TV, it’s still a major milestone when a series hits the 100 episode mark.

On the air since 2015, Chicago Med, the newest show in Uber-producer Dick Wolf’s midwest-set franchise, reaches the century mark this week.

Executive Producers Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider spoke with Forbes about their time guiding the series and gave a few hints about the special episode.

Explaining that the medical cases aren’t just picked at random but rather need to resonate in a certain way with the characters, Frolov says that the hardest part of producing so many episodes has been finding enough interesting medical cases that are, “compelling in their own right but that also have an emotional impact on our doctors.”

With a large cast of characters, it might seem like a challenge to keep the storylines for each of them flowing, but Schneider insists, “Our characters are so different and have such different areas of expertise that it’s not hard to service them all.” Giving a shout out to the cast, he adds, “And our actors are so wonderful that we want to write for each and every one of them!”

Looking back, Schneider points to a few moments this season that have been meaningful for him. “There’ve been so many, it’s hard to pick one.  We were certainly moved by [Dr.] Will Halstead’s decision to break things off with [Dr.] Natalie [Manning] earlier this season. We were also moved by [Dr.] Charles explaining to his daughter Robin that her mother CeCe, dying from cancer, didn’t want Robin to see her pass.”

It isn’t really much of a reveal, but about the 100th episode, the duo hint, “Let’s just say that all the stories we’ve been developing throughout the season will come to a head in the 100th.  And these developments will resonate throughout the rest of the season.”

In addition to finishing out this season, it was recently announced that the series has been picked up for at least three additional years. Frolov admits that the thought of this is both ‘daunting and exciting.’

Schneider added that, “From a writing perspective, it’s great to know we have a breadth of time to develop stories and characters.”

Pressed for just a little more info about what’s to come, Schneider revealed that, “We meet [Dr.] Charles’ adolescent youngest daughter. And for all his expertise as a psychiatrist, he is ill-equipped to deal with a difficult 13 year-old!”

The 100th episode of ‘Chicago Med’ airs Wednesday, March 18th at 8e/p. Past episodes are available for streaming on NBC.com
