In the week since George Floyd died after being pinned down to the pavement by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, street artists worldwide have paid homage to Floyd and demanded justice for victims of racism through public murals in cities like Idlib, Barcelona, Dublin and Berlin.

KEY FACTS

A mural featuring Floyd painted on the ruins of a bombed-out building in Idlib, Syria, went viral on social media as Syrian artists Aziz Asmar and Anis Hamdoun said they painted the mural to show solidarity with U.S. protesters and “to call for peace and love.”

Asmar told local media that Floyd’s death reminded him of the Syrian civilians who were “killed by suffocation after the Syrian regime hit them with chemical weapons,” according to Arab News.

Murals of Floyd also popped up in European cities like Berlin, Dublin and Barcelona, where protesters marched over the weekend and Monday to demand justice for Floyd and victims of racism and police brutality.
