Supreme Court Blocks Trump Administration From Ending DACA

TOPLINE

The Supreme Court on Thursday blocked the Trump administration from ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program—introduced by the Obama administration to protect undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children—and a major blow to President Trump’s domestic position on immigration.

KEY FACTS

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the majority opinion, and was joined by Justices Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Sonia Sotomayor, Stephen Breyer and Elena Kagan.

Roberts wrote that the federal government did not provide an adequate reason to end DACA, and could try again with a more detailed argument.

The opinion further concluded that the Trump administration did not follow proper procedures as ascribed by law in its move to end the program, nor did it thoroughly consider how it would impact the program’s participants, who were protected from deportation and allowed to work in the U.S.

Trump might not want to make a second attempt at ending the program, NBC News reported, because he is seeking re-election in November and DACA is a popular program.

One of Trump’s campaign promises was to end DACA, which he viewed as a type of illegal amnesty for young, undocumented immigrants.

The DACA decision is the second Supreme Court defeat handed to the Trump administration this week, after earlier deciding that a provision of the Civil Rights Act protects LGBT workers from discrimination.

Big number

800,000 undocumented immigrants were protected from deportation by DACA.

Key background

DACA was introduced by the Obama administration in 2012. The program protected undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children from deportation as well as the ability to work, but did not provide a path to citizenship.
