Tennessee’s Covid-19 Outbreak Continues: Three More Titans Test Positive

Topline

Three more members of the Tennessee Titans tested positive for Covid-19 on Saturday, according to ESPN, bringing the total number of people within the organization who have tested positive this week to 16, casting further ambiguity on when the Titans might be healthy enough to resume their season.

Key Facts

With ESPN reporting that another player and two more team personnel tested positive Saturday, that means eight Titans players and eight staff members have tested positive over the past six days.

The NFL announced Thursday that the Week 4 matchup between Tennessee and the Pittsburgh Steelers was officially postponed.

On Friday, the league confirmed the Titans-Steelers game would be rescheduled for Week 7 on Oct. 25, with Week 4 serving as a bye week for both clubs.

However, the additional positive tests within the Titans organization now puts the team’s Week 5 game against the Buffalo Bills in jeopardy.

Officials from the NFL and the Players Association traveled to Tennessee on Friday to examine the impact of the coronavirus outbreak.

The stated aim was for Titans players and coaches to return to the team’s practice facility by early next week, but it will likely remain shuttered until multiple days pass without a positive test.

Key Background:

As of Friday, the seven Titan players that had tested positive were wide receivers Adam Humphries and Cameron Batson, nose tackle DaQuan Jones, linebacker Kamalei Correa, cornerback Kristian Fulton, long-snapper Beau Brinkley and tight end Tommy Hudson. On Wednesday, head coach Mike Vrabel told reporters that some were experiencing flu-like symptoms. The Steelers-Titans game is the first Covid-related schedule modification of the season and the first time since 2017 that any NFL game has had to be postponed. The Minnesota Vikings, who played the Titans last weekend, have had no players, coaches or staffers test positive this week. They are leaving Saturday to travel to Houston to play the Texans at 1 p.m. ET Sunday at NRG Stadium, as originally scheduled.

Tangent:

The Pittsburgh Steelers were scheduled to play the Baltimore Ravens in Week 7, but the Ravens had a bye in Week 8, giving the league some flexibility. Thus, the NFL decided to shift the Ravens-Steelers to Week 8, enabling Tennessee to host Pittsburgh in Week 7.
