The Final Season Of Netflix’s ‘Kipo And The Age Of Wonderbeasts’ Finds Optimism At The End Of The World

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts depicts a world gone horribly, apocalyptically wrong, through the eyes of the infectiously optimistic Kipo, tirelessly working to rebuild civilization for the better.

In the third and final season of the Netflix animation, Kipo seeks to make allies out of enemies, and forge new friendships, while antagonist Dr. Emilia controls her tribe of humans through fear of the outsider, a feeling that the mutes seem to share, even amongst each other.

Thus, Kipo and her friends form the “Human Mute Ultimate Friendship Alliance,” an ambitious attempt to stop the incoming war, and perhaps even usher in a new age of peace; the only problem is, the plan requires large-scale cooperation between … everyone.

It seems impossible to convince a diverse group of bitter rivals to overcome their prejudices and rivalries, even in the face of impending doom, but Kipo never loses faith in human nature, determined to create a kinder, more inclusive world, by any means necessary.

Kipo’s allies, however, include former foes and violent friends, and some don’t share her sense of morality, seeking a more pragmatic solution to the problem of Dr. Emilia.

Kipo’s final adventure through this lush, imaginative wasteland sees her grapple with complex philosophical questions, showing the difficulty of maintaining moral and solidarity during troubled times. But the show still has plenty of room for fun, the plot packed with quirky personalities, surreal sights, and epic battles between mega-mutes.

Of course, Wolf, Benson and Dave are there to help Kipo, and they’re as hilarious and entertaining as ever, accompanied by the other colorful characters we’ve gotten to know over these last 3 seasons. Their collective stories are all satisfyingly wrapped up, but it seems a shame that the show is over so soon; Kipo’s world is big and hauntingly beautiful, a vibrant landscape of collapsed concrete and overgrown highways.

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts has been one of Netflix’s most impressive animations, a post-apocalyptic fairy tale that always emphasizes the importance of empathy.
