‘The Mandalorian’ Season 2 Is Still On Track For Its October Premiere

There’s been plenty of speculation in recent months about the fate of The Mandalorian season two. But in a new interview, executive producer Jon Favreau made clear that everything is fine.

Speaking during a virtual panel at the ATX Television Festival this week, Favreau said that The Mandalorian season two will start streaming on Disney+ in October, as expected. The announcement stood in stark contrast to several other Disney+ productions, which will need to push back their timetable because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Indeed, coronavirus has wreaked havoc on Hollywood since U.S. lockdowns started in earnest in March. Both films and television shows needed to halt production because of social distancing concerns, with no indication of when work would pick back up.

Of course, Disney+ fans were understandably concerned about The Mandalorian season two, since the show was in production when the pandemic set in.

However, Favreau, whose comments were earlier reported on by The Hollywood Reporter, said during his interview that the show got lucky — thanks in no small part to technology.

“We were lucky enough to have finished photography before the lock down,” Favreau said. “Thanks to how technology-forward Lucasfilm and ILM are, we have been able to do all of our visual effects and editing and postproduction remotely through systems that had been set up by those companies for us.”

The Mandalorian was a breakout hit for Disney+’s launch, and continues to be an important selling point for the service. Season two promises the return of star Pedro Pascal, along with Gina Carano, Carl Weathers, and others. Rosario Dawson will come on the show this year to play Ahsoka Tano, Slashfilm is reporting.

We don’t know too much about season two, but Favreau hinted that all the main themes fans enjoy will remain.

“As we explore partnering with new filmmakers and having new characters and going deeper with the characters we already have,” he said, “it’s really been very fun and fulfilling and I hope people are having as much fun seeing it as we are having making it.”
