Topline: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which sees millions of visitors each year and is the among the world’s most celebrated museums, reopened Saturday to the general public for the first time since March after the coronavirus forced the doors of the storied galleries to shut.

  • According to a statement from the museum, the coronavirus closure was the first time the Met had been closed for longer than three days in more than 100 years.
  • For now, the museum will be open five days a week and only allow up to 25% of the Met’s maximum capacity, while visitors must wear face masks and are encouraged to stay six feet away from others.
  • For the past three years, the Met has ushered in upwards of 7 million visitors per year across its three New York City locations.
