‘The Social Dilemma’ Is About To Become The First Documentary On Netflix To Achieve This Incredible Milestone

Earlier today, Enola Holmes became the new #1 movie on Netflix. The network’s newly established Top 10 feature measures which movies and shows are dominating the Netflix charts each day, and the teen mystery film has catapulted to that top spot after just one day in the platform’s digital library.

Believe it or not, Enola Holmes is actually the ninth movie to capture that #1 spot this month—which is easily the most times that that many movies have come out on top of the daily rotating list in a calendar month. And because of that, there’s been no outright winner on the September Top 10 list. At this point, eight different movies have a legitimate shot at winning the title.

However, a new movie has emerged as the favorite to win. And, realistically, it’s hard to believe any other movie will catch up.

Although Love, Guaranteed held the title just a few days ago, a lot has shifted since then. And now, the social media documentary The Social Dilemma leads the pack heading into the final week of September—which marks the first time a documentary has ever been the most popular movie on Netflix in any given month.

Which is a bit surprising, considering that The Social Dilemma was not one of those nine movies to capture the #1 spot this month on Netflix. The nine movies to hold that top position in September were (in order): The Smurfs, Love, Guaranteed, #Alive, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, Pets United, The Devil All the Time, The Smurfs 2, Bastille Day and Enola Holmes.

But only two of those movies—Love, Guaranteed and Pets United—could muster a streak of at least five days. Because of that, no movie has taken hold of the monthly charts like Project Power, The Lorax and 365 Days did in recent months. At this point, The Social Dilemma has only nabbed 111 points in September—a total that would have only been good enough for fourth place in July and August.

So far, here are the ten most popular movies in September. The points are determined from a system we formed based on Netflix’s rotating Top 10 list:

  1. The Social Dilemma – 111 points
  2. The Smurfs – 98 points
  3. Pets United – 97 points
  4. Love, Guaranteed – 95 points
  5. Due Date – 84 points
  6. The Babysitter: Killer Queen – 84 points
  7. #Alive – 66 points
  8. The Smurfs 2 – 65 points
  9. Bastille Day – 62 points
  10. The Devil All the Time – 56 points

At this point, The Social Dilemma is trending higher on the daily charts than the next-closest movies: The Smurfs and Pets United. And with it being so late in the month, it’s hard to imagine films like Bastille Day and The Smurfs 2 putting together enough points to catch up. Which means September will probably be the first month when a documentary comes out on top of a Monthly Top 10 list.
