The Status Of All Disney Plus’s ‘Star Wars’ Shows For May The Fourth

It’s Star Wars day, or what we call May the Fourth, a mispronunciation of the famous movie phrase. And Star Wars is in the strangest place it’s been for a while.

While future movies are in the works, we have no idea what they are or when they’ll be set. After endless drama surrounding the most recent trilogy and sputtering solo films like uh, Solo, the future of the next slate of films is unclear.

Rather, Disney is turning to TV, bolstered by the success of The Mandalorian, and has a large slate of TV series planned set in all different time periods of the universe.

So, where are we?

Star Wars: The Clone Wars – The series got new life with one final season connecting it to Revenge of the Sith at last, and it has just concluded its run, delighting most fans who seem very happy with how the conclusion of the show played out after all these years. But if there is another show like this or Rebels planned, we haven’t heard about it, and Dave Filoni has been busy in live-action world lately instead.

The Mandalorian – Season 2 wrapped filming before the pandemic shutdowns, meaning it should not miss its fall premiere window. The show has been a huge success for Disney, and as such, a third season is reportedly already in the works with the assumption that season 2 will be a hit as well.

An Ahsoka Tanno Show – One big all-but confirmed rumor about The Mandalorian season 2 is that Rosario Dawson has been cast to play Ahsoka Tanno in a guest role in the series. Paired with past comments that The Mandalorian may introduce characters that get their own spin-offs, Ahsoka seems ripe for one, and I would be amazed if this did not come to pass.

Obi-Wan – Weird vibes surround this limited series, which was delayed out of its initial release window, but reportedly still has Ewan McGregor very much attached, and will debut in either late 2021 or 2022. It’s being run by Deborah Chow, who did some of the best Mandalorian season 1 episodes, but it remains to be seen whether this will come to fruition in the end or not.

The Cassian Andor Show – This has been a confirmed project for a long while now, with Diego Luna set to reprise his Rogue One role as Cassian Andor for a prequel series to that prequel movie. The show has been steadily adding members to its cast, directing and writing crew, but still does not have a premiere date set yet.

Leslye Headland’s Show – Headland is the brilliant mind behind Netflix’s Russian Doll, and Disney has given her a Star Wars series to play with. It will be a “female-centric” series that I thought could be the Ahsoka show, but reportedly it’s set in “a different part of the Star Wars timeline than other projects.” That could be the new High Republic era that Disney is starting to push through comics and books, which takes place well before the prequels, but well after The Old Republic.

The Old Republic – This is barely even a whisper or a rumor, but there have been reports that Disney wants to take on an adaptation of the famed BioWare games, possible as a film series, possibly as a TV series. But we have not heard anything close to concrete about this.

Unless I’m forgetting something, these are all the projects and potential projects in the works right now. Which of these are you most excited for? Let me know on Twitter.
