There ‘Definitely’ Will Be Another Stimulus Package, Trump Economic Adviser Says

TOPLINE

Senior White House Adviser Kevin Hassett said during an interview on Fox News Saturday morning that there “definitely” will be another stimulus package, one day after a surprisingly positive jobs report threw the possibility of another coronavirus aid package into question.

KEY FACTS

Congress has passed four major stimulus packages to address the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic, but the two parties have been split about how to tackle further relief as the country begins to reopen.

The disagreement has largely centered around how the two parties view an American recovery : Republicans predict a quick, sharp rebound, while Democrats foresee a slow, painful road back.

Friday’s unexpected economic news seemed to suggest the American economy could recover faster than economists originally thought, even as unemployment remains sky high: the U.S. economy added 2.5 million jobs in May as the unemployment rate dipped to 13.3% from 14.7% in April.

“Goodbye phase 4,” wrote one Republican official in a text message after jobs numbers were released on Friday morning, according to the New York Times

But Republicans, despite their hesitation to further relief, could rally behind another bill that focuses on helping Americans return to work.

The GOP seems particularly keen on passing liability protections for employers as workers return and Hassett indicated Saturday he sees the issue as one of the “biggest problems” as the country reopens.

Democrats, meanwhile, are still in favor of passing a sweeping aid package after Friday’s jobs report: at a minimum, the party wants more aid for state and local governments reeling from the pandemic, CNBC reports.

Key background

House Democrats pushed through a $3 trillion relief bill last month that Republican senators rejected swiftly. The bill included more $1200 cash payments for Americans and an extension to the expanded unemployment insurance program set to January 31, 2021 (the program is set to run out at the end of July.)  GOP lawmakers want to do away with relief programs such as the expanded unemployment insurance program because they argue it disincentives people to work. For weeks, though, the party has been unable to coalesce around one proposal. The job report from Friday could further derail those efforts.

Surprising fact

New estimates from the Congressional Budget Office show that extending the extended unemployment benefits until 2021 would boost consumer spending but stifle growth in other areas.

Crucial quote

Before Friday’s job numbers, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) had criticized Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for not acting more swiftly. “You want a pause? Tell that to the virus,” Pelosi said during a press conference on May 28, referring to McConnell’s hesitation.
