These 10 Movies Dominated Netflix During The First Week Of September

The summer movie season looks different in 2020 than it ever has before. With theater doors shuttered, we’ve all been forced to turn to our own televisions for any and all cinematic entertainment. Which means that Netflix
NFLX
—easily the most popular streaming service on the planet—has taken center stage.

But several of the movies that dominated the summer season on Netflix—like 365 Days, The Lorax, The Old Guard and Project Power—were nowhere to be found this past week on Netflix’s Top 10. Several new films have emerged as the top dogs on the streaming platform, and we’ve ranked their weekly performances using our new Netflix measuring system.

So which shows dominated the first week of September? Here were the 10 most popular films this past week on Netflix.

10. Barbie Princess Adventure – 15 points

One of three animated projects on these weekly rankings, Barbie Princess Adventure only needed four of the seven days in September to rank amongst the top ten. Although the movie had exited the daily list by September 4, Barbie Princess Adventure made the most of its short run and broke into the Weekly Top 10.

9. Quantum of Solace – 18 points

After a promising debut on August 31 in the #2 position, Quantum of Solace quickly exited the Top 10 rankings. By September 4, the second film in the Daniel Craig 007 series had left the Daily Top 10, leaving only its 18 September points behind. Still, it was enough to rank Quantum of Solace on the Weekly Top 10.

7. (tie) Anaconda – 19 points

Anaconda only needed three days to make this list. The 1997 thriller’s first week included two days in the #4 position on the Daily Top 10—and it seems likely that Anaconda could rise even higher and make the monthly rankings by the end of September.

7. (tie) Freaks: You’re One of Us – 19 points

Despite being a relatively unknown project, Freaks: You’re One of Us did manage to spend six of the first seven days of September on the Daily Top 10. While the film never rose higher than the #6 position, Freaks: You’re One of Us garnered enough popularity to make this weekly list.

6. The Frozen Ground – 29 points

In August, The Frozen Ground became the first movie to truly dethrone Project Power from the #1 position. The Nicolas Cage/John Cusack crime thriller spent three consecutive days leading the Daily Top 10, but then swiftly fell down the rankings once September hit. The Frozen Ground did, however, spend five days on the Daily Top 10 this month.

5. Puss in Boots – 37 points

You could see a lot of Puss in Boots this month on the weekly rankings. Historically, animated films have performed amazingly well on Netflix (Despicable Me is easily the streaming platform’s most popular program this year). And Puss in Boots has confirmed that trend with seven straight days on the Daily Top 10.

4. The Boss Baby: Get That Baby! – 40 points

Yet another attempt from Netflix to create interactive projects, The Boss Baby: Get That Baby! has proven to be much more successful than Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend. The Boss Baby version of this new genre has spent every day of the month on the Daily Top 10, including four consecutive days in the #4 slot.

3. Love, Guaranteed – 49 points

We’ve witnessed the beginning stages of a prosperous Netflix run with Love, Guaranteed. The romantic comedy has garnered 49 of the maximum 50 points available in its first five days, thanks to four consecutive days in the #1 position. Expect Love, Guaranteed to rank highly on the Monthly Top 10.

2. Due Date – 58 points

Apparently, Robert Downey Jr. has enough star power to propel long-forgotten projects on Netflix. The 2010 comedy has spent each September day on the daily rankings, including three separate days in the #2 spot. Much like the other 2010 comedy How Do You Know, Due Date has been a surprise hit so far on Netflix.

1. The Smurfs – 64 points

The Smurfs may no longer dominate the Daily Top 10 rankings—but overall in the month of September, no other movie has performed better. The Smurfs spent the first three days of the month atop the daily rankings, and hasn’t fallen much further down the list since. I’d expect The Smurfs to continue its Top 10 dominance for a couple more weeks.
