Third High School In One Metro Atlanta County Is Closing After Coronavirus Outbreak

TOPLINE

Yet another high school in Cherokee County, Georgia, will close for in-person learning after a coronavirus outbreak, in a school district just north of Atlanta that has drawn national condemnation after a photo showed scores of students gathering shoulder-to-shoulder without wearing masks for the first day of fall classes.

KEY FACTS

Creekview High School is the latest school to announce an in-person closure through the end of the month, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Sunday, after 500 students went into quarantine following dozens of positive coronavirus tests among the student body.

School will continue online, a district spokeswoman told the newspaper.

This is the third school in Cherokee County to announce it would stop on campus learning.

Etowah High School was the first to close because of an outbreak, which happened shortly after the school brought national outrage with its first day picture.

Students are not required to wear masks in Cherokee County schools.

BIG NUMBER

Around 40,000. That’s how many students attend Cherokee County schools, according to AJC

KEY BACKGROUND

Coronavirus has spread rapidly in Cherokee County school settings since the school year began earlier in August. The coronavirus case count in the school district almost tripled during this past school week compared to the week before, AJC reported, and over 1,000 school community members—students or employees—are quarantined.

TANGENT

Georgia is one of a shrinking handful of U.S. states that do not have a statewide mask-wearing mandate in place. Gov. Brian Kemp, a Republican, is now allowing localities to put mandates in place if they wish, but the Cherokee County School System decided against a mandate for students before reopening schools for the year.
