This Forgotten Cameron Diaz Comedy Is Now The #1 Movie On Netflix

It’s been a wild month for movies over on Netflix
NFLX
, where ten different movies have controlled the #1 position on the Daily Top 10 list for movies in the past 29 days. The Smurfs, Pets United, Enola Holmes—the list goes on for movies that have stood at the top of the Top 10 list at some point in September. And several of them have been very surprising.

But as the month closes out, that tenth movie to capture the #1 spot may be the most surprising one yet.

The new most popular movie on Netflix today is Bad Teacher—a 2011 comedy starring Cameron Diaz. The actress plays a teacher named Elizabeth who is, to say the least, not very good at her job. She’s foul-mouthed and doesn’t really care about the kids. But she’s in for a rude awakening once her sugar daddy dumps her and she’s forced to find fulfillment in her everyday life.

Surprisingly, Bad Teacher was a big box office hit back in 2011. The comedy accrued $100.3 million at the domestic box office (which was the 29th-best total that year in the U.S.) and $216.2 million worldwide. The movie opened in second place at the domestic box office, losing out to Cars 2.

Without a doubt, September marks the most changes in the #1 movie since Netflix established the Top 10 list earlier this year. This has led to many changes in the #1 movie of the month, and now The Social Dilemma looks primed to take the September title.

So far, the ten movies to capture the #1 spot on the Daily Top 10 list have been: The Smurfs, Love, Guaranteed, #Alive, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, Pets United, The Devil All the Time, The Smurfs 2, Bastille Day, Enola Holmes, and (now) Bad Teacher. That lineup is a wild mix of forgotten cartoons, critically maligned projects and box office bombs—along with four Netflix Originals (Love, Guaranteed, The Devil All the Time, Enola Holmes and The Babysitter: Killer Queen.)

This is a huge contrast from past months when Netflix Originals have largely dominated. In recent months, star-powered films like Project Power, The Old Guard and Extraction have easily ranked as the most popular projects of their respective months.
