Tierra Whack Offers A Twist On Alanis Morissette’s “Ironic” In Her Quarantine-Inspired New Song “Stuck”

Tierra Whack made her own contribution to art in the time of quarantine with “Stuck,” a two-minute loosie she just uploaded to Twitter — and she flips a beloved track by a ‘90s icon.

“This song is dedicated to everyone on lockdown,” Tierra wrote in the video’s text.

This dark cultural moment only heightens her surreal comic sensibility, as she dons a blonde bob to poke fun at quarantine-induced cabin fever in the homemade visual. “I’m sick of being stuck in the house,” she sings. “I wanna go out now, I wanna get out now.” Naturally, the black-and-white clip makes room for plenty of melodramatic toilet-paper closeups and hand-washing scenes.

“Stuck” samples a familiar acoustic riff from Alanis Morissette’s “Ironic.” The 1996 cut became notable for its lack of irony, misattributing the titular device to mere coincidences like “rain on your wedding day.” The Canadian-American singer opened up about the scrutiny in a 2014 interview with HuffPost: “Although there are times where I’m grammatically very intense and very perfectionistic, there are other times where clearly I don’t care and I make up words and I play with words linguistically like they’re paint.”

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Morissette’s seminal album, Jagged Little Pill — and she’ll tour the disc on a bill with Garbage and Liz Phair. The U.S. leg of the trek is scheduled to kick off in Portland on June 2. (The LP got its own musical adaptation courtesy of Diablo Cody, and it opened on Broadway in December.)

Morissette’s ninth studio album, Such Pretty Forks in the Road—-her first full-length in eight years—-is set to drop on May 1, and she already released the lead single, “Reasons I Drink.” However, she recently postponed dates in Asia, Australia, and New Zealand amid coronavirus concerns.

Meanwhile, Tierra has dropped a series of tracks—-including “Unemployed,” “CLONES,” and “Gloria”—-following her acclaimed 2018 debut, Whack World. Back in February, she told Variety her next album is in the works: “I actually don’t know its deadline. I’m rushing to the studio as we speak. That’s why I wanted to talk to you now. I’m feeling ready. I’m feeling good. I just ran some errands. I can make one of the best songs that I have ever made today, right after we get off the phone. I’ve been giving myself time to experiment, because you never know.”
