Today, ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Went Where Very Few Netflix Shows Have Gone Before

Thanks to a seventh place showing today on the Daily Top 10, The Umbrella Academy has now achieved something very few shows have accomplished on Netflix

Which means the show has officially gone from a project hoping to capitalize on its promising first season to one of the most absolutely elite and untouchable productions on the streaming service’s entire catalog.

And we know that thanks to a points-tracking system that allows us to rank Netflix shows and measure their performances. We were were able to establish that system thanks to the streaming platform’s Top 10 feature, which was our first true glimpse into the inner-workings of Netflix. With those rankings (which are updated daily), we now have insight into which shows are commanding the world’s most popular digital library.

So with that Top 10 appearance today, The Umbrella Academy’s point total pushed to just over 300—an accomplishment only achieved by four other shows on Netflix. And those other shows are, without a doubt, considered to be the most superb shows available on the streaming service.

Here are the current ten most popular shows on Netflix in 2020 :

  1. Tiger King – 387 points
  2. Ozark – 377 points
  3. Outer Banks – 356 points
  4. Avatar: The Last Airbender – 339 points
  5. The Umbrella Academy – 302 points
  6. Love is Blind – 299 points
  7. All American – 266 points
  8. Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich – 261 points
  9. The Office – 255 points
  10. Space Force – 248 points

This kind of rise on the 2020 charts seemed inevitable for The Umbrella Academy—a show that has easily dominated Netflix’s summer block. This accolade is just another addition to the show’s accomplishments, which includes setting the record for most points garnered in a single month and becoming the first scripted program on Netflix (and the second show period) to spend 15 consecutive days leading the Daily Top 10.

It doesn’t seem like The Umbrella Academy is slowing down either. Today marked the show’s 37th consecutive appearance on the Daily Top 10—a milestone only six other shows have reached. And all of those projects are part of that list displayed above.

As previously mentioned, The Umbrella Academy had an incredible first month on Netflix. Not only did the program spend 15 consecutive days at #1 on the Daily Top 10—an accomplishment that only Netflix’s most viral program, Tiger King, has achieved—but The Umbrella Academy also gathered 271 points during August to easily lead the Monthly Top 10. That was by far the most points any show has ever accumulated in a single month period. That total eclipsed Love is Blind’s previous record of 250 points.

And it’s difficult to argue that The Umbrella Academy’s momentum could peter out anytime soon. The show didn’t fall outside the top three positions on the Daily Top 10 until its 29th day on Netflix—once again, an accomplishment only matched by the inarguably most popular shows on the streaming platform: Tiger King and Outer Banks.

And since that top-three run, The Umbrella Academy has remained in the mid-tier of the daily list—something not many shows have managed in the past. Usually, a program has fallen much further down the daily Netflix rankings after 20-or-so days. And by the 30th day, an overwhelming majority of shows have completely exited Top 10. So for The Umbrella Academy to be holding this strongly after 37 days is a rare feat.
