Today’s 2020 Election Polls: Democrats Even With GOP In Key Red State Races For President, Senate

Topline

New polls out Tuesday show Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and Senate Democrats neck and neck with Republicans in red states — a good sign for Democrats as they look to expand the map in 2020.

Key Facts

Biden is tied with President Trump in Georgia (47%-47%) and Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.) is narrowly ahead of Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff (47-45%), an Atlanta Journal-Constitution survey found.

The same poll, however, showed Democrats stuck in a messy runoff for Georgia’s other Senate seat: Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.) is in first with 24% of the vote, followed by Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.) and Democrat Raphael Warnock at 20%, Matt Lieberman, son of former Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, at 11%, and Democrat Ed Tarver at 5%.

The results prompted a flurry of calls by Democrats for Lieberman and Tarver to drop out of the race, in a hope that Georgia Democrats will consolidate around Warnock.

A Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll also found Trump and Biden locked in a dead heat (47%-47%) in Iowa, a state that went to the president by almost 10 points in 2016, but that Barack Obama won in 2012.

A Morning Consult tracking survey conducted Sept. 11-20 shows Sen. Lindsey Graham up just one point over Democratic challenger Jaime Harrison in South Carolina, (46% to 45%, while in North Carolina, Democrat Cal Cunningham is leading Republican Sen. Thom Tillis by 9 points, 47% to 38%.

Democrats have not been hopeful about Sen. Doug Jones keeping his seat in Alabama, and Morning Consult’s poll forecasts a blowout: GOP candidate Tommy Tuberville leads Jones by 18 points, according to Morning Consult’s survey (52%-34%).

Big Number

50%. That’s the percentage of registered voters who say the winner of the election should pick the next Supreme Court justice, according to a Morning Consult/Politico poll versus 37% who say Trump should be able to proceed now.

Crucial Quote

Nate Cohn, the New York Times polling analyst, says that that it will be “really easy” for the race to either turn into a “total blowout” by Biden or a highly competitive contest because, while Biden has strong polling numbers in Georgia, Texas, Iowa and Ohio, he’s struggling to crack a 5-point lead in the battleground states of Pennsylvania and Florida.

Surprising Fact

A Democratic presidential candidate has not won in Georgia since 1992, when former President Bill Clinton was victorious.
