Top Aide To Pro-Trump Rep. Boebert Reportedly Resigns Over Capitol Attack

Topline

A top communications staffer for Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) has resigned from his post just two weeks in over last week’s brutal assault on the Capitol, according to Axios – a sign Boebert’s hardline views may cause her career headaches as she navigates the Hill.

Key Facts

“Following the events of January 6th, I’ve decided to part ways with the office,” Ben Goldey, Boebert’s communications director, told Axios in a statement.

“I wish her and the people of Colorado’s Third District the best,” he added.

Boebert, a hardline Trump-backer known for her opposition to gun control laws and advocacy for loosening restrictions on firearms in Washington, D.C. and the Capitol, has come under fire from some colleagues for her actions during the attack.

In particular, Democratic lawmakers have taken aim at Boebert for tweeting, “Today is 1776” and vowing to “fight with everything I have to ensure the fairness of the election” before the attack.

Some have even gone as far as to accuse Boebert of purposefully broadcasting House Speaker Pelosi’s movements while the siege was underway by tweeting, “The Speaker has been removed from the chambers.”

Jeff Small, Boebert’s chief of staff, declined to comment to Forbes on Goldey’s departure but said Boebert has “hired a powerhouse team, filled all positions in her office and hit the ground running.”

Forbes has reached out to Goldey.

“Madame Speaker, I have constituents outside this building right now,” Boebert said while arguing in favor of objections to President-elect Biden’s electors.

Tangent

Boebert got into a heated online altercation with Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.) earlier this week when she claimed he accused her of giving tours to groups that later attacked the Capitol, which she said led to “death threats and hundreds of vile phone calls and emails.” Maloney shot back by noting he never mentioned her name in the MSNBC interview in question, to which Boebert responded, “A thousand apologies [Rep. Sean Maloney] I’m glad you clarified you were not making any remarks about me whatsoever. Please clarify that with the people making death threats and also MSNBC so they can set the record straight.”

What To Watch For

Boebert, whose Western Colorado district leans Republican but is theoretically competitive, has already drawn a Democratic challenger for her next reelection. Defense attorney Colin Wilhelm told the New York Post he plans to challenge Boebert, calling her “anti-authority” for her past scuffles with police.
