Top Three U.S. Health Officials—Including Fauci—Go Into Quarantine

TOPLINE

Three of the top health officials in the U.S. announced they would self-quarantine after reportedly coming into contact with White House staffers who tested positive for COVID-19, sparking concern about the virus spreading within the administration.

KEY FACTS

The quarantined officials include Dr. Robert Redfield,  director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Stephen Hahn, commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, and Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a key member of the White House coronavirus task force.

Though officials declined to identify the individuals who tested positive and prompted the self-quarantines, the White House has said that a Navy valet who works for President Trump and Katie Miller, the press secretary to Vice President Mike Pence, both recently tested positive.

The Washington Post reported that Miller, who is married to Trump adviser Stephen Miller, had been in the White House Situation Room for a task force meeting with senior members of the administration on Thursday morning and then a  Friday morning senior staff meeting before testing positive.

Fauci said he would begin “modified quarantine” because of a “low risk” contact with a staff member of the White House who tested positive, and said he would get tested everyday, according to CNN

Trump and Pence will now be tested for coronavirus daily, and anyone who is in proximity to them must first test negative for the disease, according to a Saturday night statement from White House spokesman Judd Deere.

Crucial Quote

“We’ve all been exposing ourselves to risks, under the best guidance we could possibly have to keep us safe. We’re willing to take those risks because we love our country,” said White House Senior Economic Advisor Kevin Hassett in a Sunday CNN interview.

Key Background

Experts have expressed concern with the COVID-19 safety precautions practiced by White House officials. Though the federal government recommends that every American wear a mask in public, on Saturday, President Trump met with senior military officials without wearing a mask—and has yet to be seen wearing a face mask. And on April 28, Vice President Mike Pence drew criticism from the Mayo Clinic after visiting the healthcare facility without a mask.

What To Watch

All three officials are scheduled to testify before the Senate this week about the coronavirus, and while Redfield and Hahn have announced they will testify by video, Fauci is still planning to appear, though he will be wearing a mask, according to CNN.
