Top WWE NXT Star Set For World Title Match Amid Serious Allegations

WWE NXT announced Velveteen Dream, who is currently being plagued by allegations of inappropriate behavior with minors, is moving forward with plans for an NXT Championship Match between Dream and current champion Adam Cole.

The two have been feuding dating back to The Undisputed Era’s attack on Velveteen Dream in October, which was done to write the rising star off television due to a back injury.

Just 24 years of age, Velveteen Dream was introduced to the wrestling world as Patrick Clark during the 2015 season of Tough Enough. Despite being surprisingly eliminated in Week 5, Clark made a lasting impression with his flawless physique, sharp promo ability and palpable charisma. Then-host, and current AEW star, Chris Jericho personally gave him words of encouragement, saying “I wouldn’t have made that choice (to eliminate Clark).”

In what was supposed to be yet another milestone moment in the promising career of Velveteen Dream, his second NXT Championship match will inevitably be overshadowed by controversy as serious allegations of inappropriate behavior on social media remain pending.

Last month, Dream was the subject of accusations, which surfaced on Reddit, that the former NXT North American champion was soliciting sext messages with minors.

The accuser noted she was 17, while her friends were 15 and 16, and shared screenshots of conversations and a sexually explicit photo alleging to be Velveteen Dream.

Velveteen Dream vehemently denied these allegations, tweeting the following:

Dream’s tweet suggested he may have been the victim of a potential hacking situation, however details surrounding these accusations remain cloudy with no updates as of this writing.

Assuming an investigation is ongoing, it’s difficult to imagine Velveteen Dream finally climbing the mountain to win his first NXT Championship as long as the investigation is open. While Velveteen Dream capturing NXT’s top title will certainly raise his profile, it will also shine a brighter light on his budding scandal, which would open the floodgates for further conjecture as long as there are more questions than answers.

WWE, despite its penchant for both manufactured and real-life drama, is a very risk-averse company when it comes to scandal and controversy. Its refusal to mention terms like “Donald Trump” or “coronavirus” on air are two of many examples of the promotion existing in a bubble of pure sports entertainment devoid of negative, real-world distractions.

WWE has not yet responded to a request for comment but this article will be updated if and when they do.
