Trump Is Reopening National Parks—But You Can Also Go On These ‘Virtual Hikes’ From Home

TOPLINE

U.S. President Donald Trump announced this week that the country’s national parks will begin to slowly reopen after closing due to the coronavirus pandemic, but if you don’t live near one—or if you count yourself among the majority of Americans who still support social distancing measures—here are six parks you can hike virtually from the comfort of your quarantine.

KEY FACTS

On average, 4 million people a year visit Yosemite National Park in California to see its famous granite cliffs and giant sequoia trees—but you can see those virtually from your couch. You can even peek into the windows of the Ansel Adams Art gallery, located on the park’s grounds.

Perhaps the most famous of America’s national parks, the Grand Canyon in Arizona has many of its hiking trails and best lookout points available virtually, and you can even take a look at the Tusayan Ruins, an archeological site with what’s left of an 800-year-old Ancestral Puebloan village.

Big Bend National Park is a sprawling protected area along the border of Texas and Mexico that is home to thousands of different species of plants and animals, with a nearly five mile trail online for virtual hiking.

Don’t let the name scare you—California’s Death Valley has gorgeous views of the desert, winding canyon trails and even an old gold mining town from 1905, a popular filming spot for Hollywood productions that you can check out virtually.

Straddling the border of North Carolina and Tennessee, Great Smoky Mountain National Park features preserved historic sites from the mountain culture of Southern Appalachia and has a hiking trail that goes up to 1,400 feet in elevation to virtually tour.

Not all of the U.S. National Parks are continental: The Virgin Islands National Park on St. John, one of the U.S. Virgin Islands, offers trails through tropical forests and old sugar plantation ruins, ancient carvings by the Taino people and miles of white sand beaches—all of which you can explore online

KEY BACKGROUND

On Wednesday, during a tree planting ceremony at the White House to mark Earth Day, Trump announced his administration would soon reopen national parks. Details about which parks will reopen and how are set to be released over the coming days, according to The Hill. The National Park Service said that while select outdoor spaces in some parks are still open for the public to enjoy, iconic American parks like The Grand Canyon and Yellowstone have been closed because of the coronavirus pandemic. However, a poll released this week found that nearly 90% of Americans say they still support having social distancing measures in place, or even wish for stricter ones.
