Trump Lashes Out At ‘Loser’ Anti-Trump GOP Group For Attack Ad

TOPLINE

President Trump lashed out on Twitter Tuesday morning at the Lincoln Project — a group of anti-Trump Republicans — for an attack ad they made criticizing the president’s response to the coronavirus.

KEY FACTS

“They don’t know how to win, and their so-called Lincoln Project is a disgrace to Honest Abe,” Trump tweeted.

The ad, entitled “Mourning in America,” plays off of the famously upbeat Ronald Reagan “Morning in America” re-election 1984 campaign ad, but with a more dystopian message: “Today more than 60,000 have died from a virus Trump ignored.”

The Lincoln Project’s members include attorney George Conway (husband of Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway’s husband); John Weaver, a Republican strategist who worked for former Ohio Gov. John Kasich and John McCain; and Rick Wilson, another longtime GOP strategist.

Trump taunted the members individually in his Twitter thread Tuesday, calling Conway a “loser” and referring to him as “Moonface”: “I don’t know what Kellyanne did to her deranged loser of a husband, Moonface, but it must have been really bad.”

The ad lays blame solely on Trump for the fallout from the virus outbreak: “Under the leadership of Donald Trump, our country is weaker and sicker and poorer,” the narrator says.

Key background

The Lincoln Project is a Super PAC launched in December of last year by disaffected conservatives looking to “defeat Trump and Trumpism” in 2020, even at the expense of electing Democrats. “Electing Democrats who support the Constitution over Republicans who do not is a worthy effort.,” the group’s mission statement on its website reads.

Crucial quote

“Our efforts will be dedicated to defeating President Trump and Trumpism at the ballot box and to elect those patriots who will hold the line,” Conway, Weaver, Wilson and Steve Schmidt, another member, wrote in a New York Times op-ed announcing the formation of the PAC in December 2019.

Tangent

In a prolonged interview with Fox News Sunday night at the Lincoln Memorial, Trump criticized the “hostile press” before pointing up at the memorial and saying that he has been treated “worse” as president than was Abraham Lincoln, who was, of course, assassinated.
