Trump Repeatedly Slips Up And Acknowledges His Loss During Georgia Rally

Topline

President Donald Trump on Saturday appeared to repeatedly, accidentally acknowledge his loss in the presidential election while simultaneously making false claims of victory and boasting about his showing.

Key Facts

“I think they say that if you win Florida and if you win Ohio, in history you’ve never lost an election. This has got to be the first time,” Trump said at the start of his speech despite repeatedly refusing to concede since the election was called for Biden nearly a month ago.

Apparently recognizing his mistake, Trump immediately added, “But the truth is they were right. We’ve never lost an election, we’re winning this election,” despite Democrat Joe Biden’s clear victory.

At the rally – held for Sens. Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.) and David Perdue (R-Ga.), who are both competing to keep their seats in the Jan. 5 runoff – Trump also tacitly acknowledged Kamala Harris as vice president-elect.

“At stake in this election is control of the U.S. Senate… the voters in Georgia will determine which party runs every committee,” Trump stated, despite the fact that Democrats, who currently have 48 seats, only have a shot at the majority because Harris will be the tiebreaker.

Much of Trump’s speech – which was teased by one of his advisers as being filled with effusive praise for Loeffler and Perdue – was devoted to relitigating the presidential election and making false claims of fraud.

“I thought we would easily win,” Trump said, adding that he’s “probably worked harder in the last three weeks” than he has in his life, despite having mostly empty schedules and devoting his time to pressuring officials to overturn the results of the election.

Surprising Fact

Despite refusing to concede an election he lost and making unfounded claims the election was stolen, Trump claimed he would step aside graciously if he believed he lost. “If I lost, I’d be a very gracious loser. If I lost, I would say ‘I lost,’” he said, adding that he would “go to Florida and I’d take it easy.”

Crucial Quote

“We can fight for the presidency and fight to elect our two great senators and we can do it at the same time. We can do it at the same time, it’s alright,” Trump said, despite concerns from some Republicans – including his own campaign – that the voter fraud rhetoric pushed by him and his allies may depress GOP turnout in the runoffs.

Big Number

48%. That’s the share of voters who say they support Democrat Jon Ossoff in the poll by Trafalgar Group, a firm that predicted Trump would win the election. Ossoff edges out Perdue by just 1 point. Loeffler fares better, however: she leads Democrat Raphael Warnock by 5 points, 50% to 45%.
