Trump Returns To Oval Office Despite Covid-19 Infection

Topline

President Donald Trump returned to the Oval Office on Wednesday afternoon to receive a briefing on coronavirus stimulus negotiations and Hurricane Delta, a White House spokesperson confirmed, just two days after the president was released from the hospital, and hours after White House staffers denied that Trump had been working from the Oval Office on Tuesday.

Key Facts

Wednesday morning, Larry Kudlow, the president’s economic adviser, said Trump had been working from the Oval Office a day after returning from the hospital, but the White House issued a quick clarification, stating the president remained isolated in his residence.

However, chief of staff Mark Meadows told reporters a bit later in the morning that Trump wanted to return to the Oval Office on Tuesday and that safety precautions (including “PPE, masks, goggles, and the like,”) were being taken to fulfill the president’s request.

“If he decides to go to the Oval, we’ve got safety protocols there that are, not only from a PPE standpoint but a ventilation standpoint, in the Oval where we can actually work to that end as well,” said Meadows.

According to the most recent guidance from the Center For Disease Control and Prevention, infected individuals should self-isolate for ten days after the onset of symptoms, or ten days after their first positive test, to stem the spread of the virus to others.

The administration continues to refuse to provide clarification as to when the president last tested negative, with White House spokesperson Brian Morgenstern telling reporters Wednesday, “I don’t know when he last tested negative… We’re not asking to go back through a bunch of records and look backwards.”

White House Physician Sean Conley provided a brief, written update Wednesday on the president’s condition, declaring that Trump felt “great,” has been fever-free for over four days, and that his oxygen saturation level is normal.

Key Background:

Trump announced he tested positive for the coronavirus early Friday morning and was hospitalized later that day. He spent the weekend at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center before being released on Monday evening. On Wednesday morning, the president unleashed a barrage of more than 50 tweets and retweets between 9 am and 11:30 am. At 3:43 pm Wednesday, Trump tweeted that he had been briefed on Hurricane Delta, and had spoken with Gov. John Bel Edwards of Louisiana and Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas. According to the New York Times, presidential advisers were exploring the idea of resuming travel events for Trump as soon as next week.

“He’s doing real well. We actually spent some time together yesterday working very hard from the residence, and I can tell you that he’s fully engaged and feeling great,” Mark Meadows said Wednesday.
