The Russian Army continues to attack the towns of Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Lyman, trying to strengthen its tactical position on the Kupianks front, General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said in a daily war update on January 10. Russia focuses its forces on capturing the Donetsk region within the state border, but to no avail. Over the past 24 hours, Ukrainian servicemen repelled Russian attacks near Bilohorivka, Chervonopopivka, and Kuzmine, in the Luhansk region; and Soledar, Pidhorne, Bakhmut, Vodyane, Mayorsk, Mariinka, in the Donetsk region. There, Russian troops suffered grave losses: only in the first week of 2023 around, 120 Russian servicemen are hospitalized in Novotroitsk Hospital. Ukrainian defense forces aviation attacked enemy personnel concentration and military equipment areas 18 times. Moreover, two Orlan-10 drones were shot down.

The Battle for Donbas goes on, said President Zelenskyy in his video appeal to the nation on January 9. “I thank all our warriors who defend our Bakhmut and demonstrate maximum resilience! I thank all the warriors in Soledar who withstand new and even tougher attacks of the occupiers! It is extremely difficult – there are almost no whole walls left… And what did Russia want to gain there? Everything is completely destroyed, there is almost no life left. And thousands of their people were lost: the whole land near Soledar is covered with the corpses of the occupiers and scars from the strikes. This is what madness looks like,” his speech said.

Kherson’s residential area was shelled on January 10 by the Russian army, Kyrylo Tymoshenko, Deputy Head of the Office of the President, wrote. An enemy shell hit the courtyard of one of the city’s apartment buildings, creating an enormous crater there. One civilian was wounded. “One person is injured, the others are shocked and show us their shattered homes. Not a single piece of glass in the apartment of Larisa, an ordinary resident, survived the attack. Blast wave knocked out her home’s door. Woman and her child who was peacefully sleeping in her bed at that time miraculously survived,” Yaroslav Yanushevych, Kherson governor, said shortly after visiting the site.

Mykolaiv city has received 226 diesel heaters and eight generators from the Czech Republic capital, Prague, the Mykolaiv city council said on January 10. Generators with a total capacity of 7.5 kW are to be distributed to various Mykolaiv municipal institutions to ensure their operation during black outs. “The city will be able to use diesel heaters at points of invincibility. They are mobile and capable of heating large rooms. We thank our friends for their help,” the council’s message said. The equipment delivery was organized by Ukrzaliznytsia.

IAEA monitoring missions are to be deployed to all Ukraine’s nuclear power plants to control their security status under warfare conditions, Oleh Korikov, State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate Chief, told the UKRINFORM news agency on January 9. “Ukraine has invited IAEA monitoring missions to all the nuclear power plants, including Chornobyl ones. IAEA agreed on this proposal, and appropriate missions will be deployed at all NPPs soon,” Korikov said. According to Korikov, the objective of such missions is to monitor the security situation amid conditions Ukraine and its nuclear facilities currently face. Through them, IAEA professionals will see for themselves the impact of direct rocket strikes at nuclear plants.

Germany’s minister for foreign affairs, Annalena Baerbock, visited Kharkiv. This is the first time a European high-ranking official visited the city since the full-scale invasion broke out in February. “Kharkiv – besieged, shot to pieces, liberated. This city is a symbol of the absolute insanity of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine and of the endless suffering that people, especially here, in the east of the country, are confronted with every day,” Baerbock said, according to the German Federal Foreign Office press release. “At the invitation of my Ukrainian counterpart and friend Dmytro Kuleba, I want to get an idea of the situation here in Kharkiv today and, above all, listen to the residents who are struggling with the war in this bitterly cold winter, when temperatures up to -15 degrees hit so hard that we can’t even imagine. In all parts of Ukraine, from Kharkiv to Kherson to Kyiv, people should know that they can count on our solidarity and support.”
