UFC On ESPN 9: Tyron Woodley Vs. Gilbert Burns Stats And Video Highlights

0

Gilbert Burns made a statement last night with a one-sided win over former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley in the main event of UFC on ESPN 9.

Burns might have respected what Woodley accomplished during his run in the welterweight division, but that respect did not keep the former lightweight from fighting aggressively against the man who defended the 170-pound crown four times during his title reign.

Burns hurt Woodley early, dropping him with strikes and opening a nasty gash above Woodley’s eyebrow in the first round of the five-round contest.

Once he had the advantage, Burns never let his foot off the gas. He controlled the fight in every space. He beat Woodley on the feet, on the ground, against the fence and in the open. For a fighter who was once known as a grappler, Burns showed the world that he is much more than a one-dimensional competitor.

UFC on ESPN 9 was Burns’ first main event fight. He had zero issues with his cardio. He pushed the pace throughout the 25-minute scrap and even as the clock ticked down in the final round, Burns still pushed forward.

If last night’s scrap wasn’t Burns’ best career performance, it was a very close second.

Burns, who fought most of his career as a lightweight, moved up to welterweight in August 2019. He has won his past four fights at 170-pounds and was the No. 6 ranked welterweight entering UFC on ESPN 9. He should move up the rankings when they refresh early this week.

After the victory, Burns requested a title fight. He might not get that desired bout in his next outing, but it won’t be a surprise if he does.

UFC on ESPN 9 took place at UFC Apex in Las Vegas. ESPN broadcast the entire card. The event also streamed on ESPN+.
