University Of Michigan Undergraduates Required To Shelter-In-Place For 2 Weeks

Topline

University of Michigan undergraduates are mandated to shelter-in-place for two weeks effective immediately because of an increase in students who have contracted Covid-19, the school’s president Mark Schlissel said Tuesday, noting the decision was made in cooperation with the local health department because the spike put pressure on case investigators and contact tracers as well as quarantine and isolation housing capacity.

Key Facts

In a letter to the school community, Schlissel wrote all undergraduate students living on campus or in nearby off-campus housing are required to remain in place, with an exception for essential needs, including doctor’s appointments, voting, volunteering as a poll worker, exercising or attending religious activities.

Michigan’s sports teams will be able to play as long as practices and competitions occur under medical supervision and regular virus tests are conducted by the Big Ten, he said, noting there have not been any confirmed cases of transmission among athletes.

Michigan took precautions outside the order by making more undergraduate courses fully remote out of an “abundance of caution” and to provide more options for students and staff, Schlissel wrote.

Schlissel said the order was made to address social gatherings which have been identified as the primary cause of recent Covid-19 spread on Michigan’s campus stemming primarily from small and medium-size gatherings with a lack of social distancing and mask-wearing.

Key Background

At the University of Michigan and colleges and universities across the county, this semester looks different than any other. Michigan encouraged students to continue following public health precautions including mask-wearing, social distancing, reducing the size of gatherings and completing daily symptom checks. Schlissel also urged students to respond quickly and honestly to contact tracers to help mitigate the spread.
