Vermont Gov. Scott Joins Republicans Who Won’t Vote Trump—But Not Ready To Endorse Biden, Either

TOPLINE

Phil Scott, the Republican governor of Vermont, announced Friday he won’t be voting for President Trump come November, but, like a number of GOP officials distancing themselves from the current administration, is hesitant to pledge allegiance to team Biden.

KEY FACTS

“I have not decided, at this point, whether to cast a vote for former Vice President Biden,” said Scott, a moderate Republican who positioned a vote for the Democratic nominee as “something I would consider.”

While a number of Republicans have announced their endorsement of Biden over Trump, including a group of over 70 National Security officials who served under GOP presidents, Scott is not alone in his resistance to fully hop party lines.

Rep. Francis Rooney (R-Fla.) has publicly stated that he won’t be voting for Trump, criticizing the president’s handling of the pandemic and saying he’s “driving us all crazy,” and while leaning toward Biden, worries that liberal influence may pull the former vice president too far from the political mainstream.

Despite heavy criticism and a published book in which he calls for Trump to become a “one-term president,” former National Security Adviser John Bolton has said he “won’t be voting for Joe Biden either,” and plans to write in a “yet to be determined” Republican conservative.

Retired Navy admiral William McRaven, who directed the raid killing Osama bin Laden, decried Trump as lacking the “qualities necessary to be a good commander in chief,” but didn’t offer his support for Biden, saying: “This fall, it’s time for new leadership in this country—Republican, Democrat or independent.”

Then, there are long-time critics Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) and former president George W. Bush who didn’t vote for Trump in 2016 and have both reportedly decided to withhold again in 2020, but haven’t yet endorsed Trump’s key opponent.

Crucial Quote

Though Bolton said he respects the choice of Republicans casting their votes for Biden, deeming it a “sensible strategy,” the former Trump staffer said he also understands why Republicans wouldn’t flock to Biden, explaining “they’re afraid of what the left wing of the party would do in a Biden administration, as am I.”

Key Background

Trump has used fear of progressive influence among some more moderate voters as a key line of attack against the Democrats, calling Biden a “Trojan horse for socialism” and labeling running mate Sen. Kamala Harris as “more liberal than Bernie Sanders,” a democratic socialist. The Biden campaign worked hard to mitigate an overly left-leaning image of the Democratic party during this week’s national convention, featuring a number of Republican speakers, like former Ohio Gov. John Kasich and former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who have offered their endorsements of Biden. However, progressive policies, influenced by a changing Democratic party, underlined both Biden’s and Harriss’s nomination acceptance speeches, a potential deterrent for some pondering Republican party dissenters.

Quick Tangent

A handful of other top Republicans are weighing divestment from the Trump administration in 2020, including Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), the senate’s second top-ranking Republican woman, who has said she’s “struggling” with the decision.
