Volkswagen’s ID.3 Leapfrogs Tesla, Renault In October European EV Sales Charts

Volkswagen’s ID.3 hatch blew by both Tesla and Renault to become the best selling electric car (EV) in Europe in October.

It even surged to become the best selling car overall in Norway, The Netherlands and Ireland, taking more than 19 percent overall market share in Norway.

While Renault’s Zoe hatch has lead the sales charts for EVs for most of 2020, it was swamped by the surging ID.3 Volkswagen as the Zwickau plant’s production ramp hit full swing.

The shock news was that the darling of EV investors, Tesla, dropped out of Europe’s EV Top 10 entirely for the month.

Tesla, with its online sales strategy, attacked hard earlier this year while Covid-19 stopped Europe’s mainstream automakers cold, only for the battle to be turned once normal service resumed.

Volkswagen only began deliveries of the ID.3 in September and found 10,315 buyers for the month, while the Zoe maintained its strength with 9,614.

Instead of the ID.3, Volkswagen will send the ID.4 SUV EV to North America, and today confirmed its 250-mile EPA rating.

It was a long drop down to the third-placed car, the Hyundai Kona, at 5,999 sales, according to The European Electric Car Report.

So far this year, though, the Renault Zoe has 71,521 registrations, according to the report, and the Tesla Model 3 remains in second place with 56,108.
