West Coast Braces For A Labor Day Heat Wave

TOPLINE

The West Coast is set to experience yet another record-breaking heatwave over Labor Day weekend, increasing the threat of more wildfires in an already devastating fire season.

KEY FACTS

50 million people in Nevada, California and Arizona are under excessive heat watches or warnings from Friday to Monday.

Los Angeles faces temperatures of up to 110 degrees on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service, while Phoenix and Las Vegas are expected to reach 113 and 112 degrees respectively.

Palm Springs may reach 119 degrees on Saturday and Sunday and Death Valley along the California-Nevada border is expected to see 125 degree temperatures.

Local officials are warning of the dangers of heat exhaustion and heat stroke and recommend calling 911 if you or someone you know has a throbbing headache; no sweating; a red, hot or dry skin; rapid, strong pulse; nausea and vomiting or any loss of consciousness.

Extreme heat may complicate efforts to battle some of the largest fires in California history, which are still blazing through the northern part of the state even though firefighters have made significant progress this week, or increase the risk of additional fires sparking.

Heat waves have been occurring more frequently and at greater severity in recent years, according to the U.S. Global Change Research Program, and recent evidence shows that human-caused climate change is linked to such extreme weather events.

Big number

Some locations may record temperatures that are 20 to 25 degrees higher than normal for this time of the year, the National Weather Service warns.

Key background

This is the second record-breaking heatwave the West coast has seen in less than a month. On Aug. 16, California may have produced one of the highest temperatures ever recorded in human history with a 130 degree reading in Death Valley. Not only did the August heatwave help spark the wildfires in the first place, but the company overseeing the state’s energy grid implemented two days of rolling blackouts due to increased electricity usage for air conditioning. There are no blackouts planned for this weekend, but California’s Independent System Operator is calling on residents to conserve energy.
