WWE NXT Results—Wednesday, July 29, 2020

Io Shirai and Tegan Nox def. Dakota Kai and Candice LeRae

This was an exciting and action-packed opening match, but one has to assume it’s finna get slaughtered with The Demo God in the opening segment on AEW.

I felt like Tegan Nox should be the No. 1 contender until I noticed how menacingly Dakota Kai was staring at Io Shirai.

Johnny Gargano def. Roderick Strong

This was a wacky match of two small heels who can work their asses off. I didn’t know what to do, let alone who to cheer for.

Give this match 10 more minutes on pay-per-view and it might run away with Match of the Year in NXT, but as a TV match I was slightly disappointed.

Mercedes Martinez def. Shotzi Blackheart

WWE has no idea what it has in Shotzi Blackheart and it’s so sad to see.

Mercedes Martinez might be on the fast track to beat Io Shirai for the NXT Women’s Championship based on how strongly this promotion has booked her of late.

Keith Lee Faces off with Karrion Kross

Based on this segment alone I’m convinced Karrion Kross is winning the NXT Championship and it’s a bittersweet feeling.

NXT is wisely using Scarlett as a heater until it’s time to unleash Kross on Lee.

Lost in the shuffle of this intense exchange was poor Cameron Grimes, who had to take a Spirit Bomb for no damn reason.

Imperium def. Ever-Rise

It’s rare to see a tag team squash match since the downfall of The Viking Raiders. This certainly could have qualified as one of them.

Isaiah “Swerve” Scott def. Jake Atlas

After a promising performance in the NXT Cruiserweight Championship tournament, Jake Atlas seems to have fallen out of favor in Full Sail.

This match was further proof that Isaiah Scott may be, pound-for-pound, the most underrated wrestler on Wednesday nights.

Dexter Lumis def. Finn Balor and Timothy Thatcher

I was fascinated to see just how Timothy Thatcher would take to a Triple Threat match. I was even more curious to see how he’d take to a Ladder Match, so I guess I was kind of pulling for him in this one.

People forget how well-suited Finn Balor is for the unique spectacle that is any Timothy Thatcher match.

The finish of this match was very cleverly done amid a chain of submissions.
