WWE WrestleMania 36 Night 1 Results: The Undertaker And The Winners, Losers Of Coronavirus-Impacted PPV

Night 1 of WWE WrestleMania 36 is in the books and, contrary to popular defeat, it was far from the worst WrestleMania of all time with WWE managing to make the best out of a very bad situation.

The continued spread of the novel coronavirus forced WWE to move its annual spectacular outside of Raymond James Stadium in Tampa and into an empty-arena WWE Performance Center. The highlight of the night, and WWE’s proper direction during coronavirus-era wrestling, was the Boneyard Match, where AJ Styles and Undertaker brawled in a cinematic masterpiece.

Loser: Shayna Baszler

Plagued by whispers of Vince McMahon’s increasing frustration with Shayna Baszler’s work, Baszler lost clean to Becky Lynch just weeks after making her official main roster debut on Raw. Baszler was virtually unbeatable in WWE NXT, spending the vast majority of her tenure (548 days to be exact) as women’s champion.

With one major loss already under her belt, it’s tough to imagine Shayna Baszler salvaging this situation to become the top heel she was at Full Sail University.

Winner: Kevin Owens

This feud was built around Kevin Owens’ lack of a WrestleMania moment and, until the Boneyard Match, he had the most memorable single spot of Night 1 when he dove off the WrestleMania sign.

Owens winning a big match as a babyface sets him apart from the vast majority of babyfaces on the Raw roster, and his trajectory looks promising moving forward.

Winner: Braun Strowman

Braun Strowman finally climbed the mountain with a win over Goldberg in two minutes and 10 seconds.

Strowman’s window of opportunity to be a world champion may have slammed shut after failing to convert in six pay-per-view matches, but the window was reopened when Roman Reigns was forced to pull out of an event where he wasn’t even scheduled to perform.

It’ll be interesting to see if and how Braun Strowman is able to capitalize on his new lease on life.

Winners: The Undertaker and AJ Styles

The Undertaker and AJ Styles put an emphatic cherry on top of Night 1, contributing a piece of pro wrestling scripture with the first-ever Boneyard Match.

AJ Styles played a great 42-year-old cocky, young upstart, while The Undertaker shined as a grizzled, old vet not to be trifled with.

With Undertaker’s trash talking Styles for calling him an old man and questioning his legacy throughout, the Boneyard Match at times felt like The Undertaker’s response to his critics. A diss track of sorts as The Deadman showed he’s still capable of putting together classic outside-the-box wrestling matches at age 55.
