WWE WrestleMania 36 Night 1 Results: Undertaker Beats AJ Styles In Boneyard Match As American Badass

The Undertaker registered yet another WrestleMania classic in his waning portfolio against AJ Styles in a highly entertaining Boneyard Match. With the entire card ravaged by the spread of COVID-19, WWE’s closed-set setting allowed the promotion to get creative where they could.

One of the few feuds to benefit from the otherwise grim circumstances was Undertaker’s feud-turned-Boneyard Match against Styles.

The two worked an intentionally overdramatized classic, where both performers played it straight to easily draw in any viewer willing to suspend a hint of disbelief. Against all odds, WWE’s first Boneyard Match may register as the best match of WrestleMania weekend.

The match also featured Undertaker’s return to his American Badass roots, entering an ominous graveyard setting on a motorcycle while wearing a bandana. The match ended with Undertaker kicking Styles into a grave and burying him.

It simply has to be seen to believed.

With old pros Randy Orton and Edge putting on a clinic in building interest in a WrestleMania program, the same could not be said for Undertaker and AJ Styles leading into this feud. In what can easily be considered a dream match on paper, Undertaker and Styles’ beef came out of nowhere after Undertaker crashed a Gauntlet Match for the Tuwaiq trophy at Super ShowDown in Saudi Arabia.

On a card filled with bad vibes, Undertaker vanquished Styles without even taking his entrance gear off, undermining the novelty of a first counter. Styles’ subsequent personal attacks against The Undertaker that invoked the name of Taker’s wife Michelle McCool, however, introduced a contemporary version of The Undertaker in 2020. This beanie-wearing Undertaker spoke with a southern drawl and mirrored his memorable American Badass gimmick while still staying true to the core principles of being The Deadman like his “Rest in Peace” signoff.

Undertaker’s promo from this past Monday was actually an overachieving and dynamic performance that injected last-minute interest in what has been a mostly underwhelming feud. The Undertaker’s change in character might be the right choice to give him more of a Clint Eastwood feel as he continues to perform at an advanced age.

With the Undertaker now approaching his 60s, however, it’s always fair to question whether each WrestleMania appearance will be his last. WrestleMania 35 in 2019 marked the first time Undertaker missed the spectacular in 19 years.

The historic snub came on the heels of a slight dustup between The Deadman and WWE as Undertaker began negotiating with rival live event producer Conrad Thompson to appear at Starrcast II, which works in concert with AEW on its pay-per-view weekends. The Undertaker was eventually pulled from the event after signing a lucrative lifetime deal with WWE.
