WWE WrestleMania 36 Results: 5 Things We Learned From Night Two

WWE
WW
capped off its first-ever two-day pay-per-view event with an unforgettable night two of WrestleMania 36, where John Cena and Bray Wyatt had one of the strangest matches ever and Drew McIntyre defeated Brock Lesnar to become WWE Champion.

Although WWE fans have been critical of its TV product in recent months, the company made the most out of an unfortunate situation when it was forced to relocate WrestleMania to the Performance Center and air the event in front of exactly zero fans. Due to those circumstances, WrestleMania 36 was never going to live up to the lofty expectations that are typically associated with WWE’s flagship pay-per-view, and even though its second night of the event was far from perfect, it was certainly a memorable show and one that set the stage for numerous post-WrestleMania storylines.

Big wins by Edge and Bayley and a surprising victory for Charlotte Flair have given the WWE Universe plenty of indications about where its major angles might be headed and what they can expect to see moving forward. Here are the five biggest takeaways from the second night of WrestleMania 36.

Charlotte Flair Is Likely Headed To NXT

WWE essentially made the surprising decision to move Charlotte Flair to NXT when “The Queen” defeated Rhea Ripley for the NXT Women’s title at WrestleMania 36.

There had been plenty of speculation that Flair—whose presence in NXT was expected to provide a big TV ratings boost but largely failed to accomplish that goal—might defeat Ripley and remain a regular in NXT on at least a semi-permanent basis, and now, it appears that she’ll do exactly that. With the viewership gap between AEW and NXT continuing to grow in AEW’s favor, Flair apparently isn’t a big enough draw to make any positive difference for the yellow brand, even though she’s WWE’s highest paid female star and was thought to be someone who could bring new eyes on the product.

Flair, however, did still won the NXT Women’s Championship at WrestleMania 36, completely halting Ripley’s momentum and essentially confirming that she’ll be headed to the yellow brand—at least for a while.

Otis And Mandy Rose Could Both Become Huge Stars

The sky is truly the limit for Otis and Mandy Rose, who finally joined forces after Otis defeated Dolph Ziggler to cap off what has surprisingly been a fantastic, lengthy storyline.

Although SmackDown has really struggled when it comes to crafting compelling narratives over the past several months, one of its biggest successes has been this love triangle involving Ziggler, Otis and Rose. You can only imagine the massive pop that Otis’ victory over Ziggler would have received had there been fans in the building, and even though Otis and Rose missed out on a true “WrestleMania moment,” the way they’ve gotten over during this rivalry is a great sign of things to come.

Vince McMahon is said to be a huge supporter of both Rose and Otis, which certainly bodes well for both stars as they figure to be two stars who will get a sizable push coming out of WrestleMania 36.

Edge Looks Fantastic

Despite being 46 years old and out of the ring for nearly a decade, Edge has aesthetically looked fantastic since returning to the ring at Royal Rumble in January.

In his first singles match since 2011, Edge looked like he hadn’t missed a beat, even though his match with Randy Orton was far too long and somewhat repetitive. At WrestleMania 36, “The Rated R Superstar” defeated Randy Orton with a storybook finish in what—had this show taken place in front of a live audience—may very well have generated the loudest reaction of any match at the event. Of course, that didn’t happen, but Edge appeared to pick up right back where he left off a decade ago as one of the best all-around performers in WWE even though WWE should have shaved a good 10 minutes off the match and made it more of a brawl.

That’s good news for WWE, which is paying Edge a whopping $3 million after he flirted with the idea of signing with All Elite Wrestling. If there were any questions about whether Edge would be limited in what he could do in the ring after previously being forced to retire, those questions were certainly answered when he showed no signs of weakness and completed a classic Edge stunt when he went crashing through Orton and a couple of tables. Now, WWE has another great part-time performer who can be used—whether as a heel or babyface—to elevate those stars he feuds with, and a myriad of potentially great feuds await the Hall of Famer.

Edge vs. AJ Styles, Daniel Bryan or Seth Rollins? Yes, please. Just let him have an actual match.

Bray Wyatt Still Needs Some Work To Regain His Momentum

Though he’s technically a heel, Bray Wyatt is WWE’s No. 1 merchandise seller and perhaps one of its most universally like superstars.

That’s why many fans absolutely hated it when WWE decided to have him lose the Universal title to Goldberg at Super ShowDown earlier this year. When a slew of late changes positioned Wyatt in a major feud with John Cena rather than the long planned WrestleMania rivalry with Roman Reigns, the hope from those fans was that Wyatt would beat Cena to regain the momentum that he undeniably lost when was quickly and soundly defeated by the 53-year-old Goldberg.

At WrestleMania 36, Wyatt indeed defeated Cena in Cena’s first match in well over a year, a very bizarre Firefly Fun House match, but even though the bout was universally praised for being so strange and yet so good, you can’t help wonder if that was truly enough to wash away the stench of that awful loss to Goldberg. Of course, a memorable performance alongside WWE’s biggest star in Cena isn’t going to hurt Wyatt, but how much it is actually going to help “The Fiend” is anyone’s guess. Wyatt’s character, after all, took a huge hit when it proved to be beatable, and now, WWE still has the tough task ahead of booking Wyatt effectively so that he isn’t totally ruined as a top star.

WrestleMania 36 was a step in the right direction, but more work must be done.

WWE Is All In On Drew McIntyre

A year ago, Drew McIntyre was nothing more than someone for Roman Reigns to beat at WrestleMania 35. Now, he’s the WWE Champion.

McIntyre defeated Brock Lesnar with a vicious Claymore kick to win the WWE Championship for the first time in his career, capping off what has been an incredible four-month stretch for one of WWE’s best all-around performers. A Royal Rumble win, a run of dominance on Raw and now a victory in the main event of WrestleMania over arguably WWE’s top special attraction is about as good as gets, especially for a star who had never previously won a world championship in WWE.

There have long been questions about whether McIntyre—who’s been plagued by start-and-stop pushes—would ever truly reach this level, but given the way he has been booked in 2020, it stands to reason that WWE is betting the house on the Scottish superstar. He is now holding the most prestigious title in all of WWE after having beat one of the most protected superstars in WWE in order to win it.

That’s a surefire sign that McIntyre is now firmly cemented as one of biggest stars in WWE.
