YouTuber David Dobrik Gives Away Teslas To Followers To Encourage Voter Registration

Topline

YouTuber David Dobrik is well-known online for his viral vlogs and giving out free cars, but his latest giveaway has a new political spin to it—he announced on his Instagram account he will give five Teslas to his followers to encourage them to register to vote in the upcoming presidential election.

Key Facts

Dobrik posted a picture of himself posing next to five white Tesla Model 3s on Tuesday sharing that he has teamed up with nonprofit HeadCount, a group devoted to encouraging voter turnout.

In the caption of the post, he promised followers a chance to win one on the Teslas if they share the post to their Instagram story, tag a friend’s handle in the comments and check if they’re registered to vote via nonprofit HeadCount’s website.

Brand new 2020 Tesla 3 models start at $35,000 each, making the overall giveaway cost at least $175,000 total.

The contest will run until October 4, and voter registration is not required to win, according to the HeadCount website.

Dobrik posted a video to his TikTok account that appeared to indicate the giveaway was inspired by a TikTok posted in early August by a user who wrote that Dobrik’s influence on Millennials and Gen Z could result in 100% voter participation in those age groups.

Surprising Fact

Dobrik himself is not eligible to vote in federal U.S. elections. Born in Slovakia and brought over to the U.S. as a small child by his parents, Dobrik is a DACA recipient, a status he occasionally references in his vlogs.

Key Background

Dobrik, with his more than 18 million YouTube subscribers, is one of the platform’s biggest stars. He is known for posting almost-daily vlogs featuring a cast of his ragtag group of influencer friends in Los Angeles, although he has stopped posting since the coronavirus pandemic hit the U.S., besides one video that featured him giving away electronics to strangers in a partnership with EA. HeadCount is known for registering voters at music events. Since the nonprofit’s launch in 2004, it has registered 600,000 voters, according to HeadCount.
