Exciting news: Zombies are finally coming to Warzone, Call Of Duty’s free-to-play battle royale game.
Warzone launched a few months after Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare as a free-to-play standalone game that was tied closely to the main game. Seasonal Battle Passes unlock rewards for both games, including skins and XP boosts and so forth.
I’m not sure how this will work once Black Ops — Cold War releases. Will we still be able to purchase a Modern Warfare Battle Pass if we want to stick with that game? Will there be two Battle Passes, one for Cold War and one for Modern Warfare, both of which tie into Warzone? That seems unlikely but it does make sense.
In any case, things are heating up as we near the big Cold War reveal which takes place in Verdansk (in-game in Warzone) tomorrow.
The game’s release date has also been leaked online, so we now have a pretty good idea of when the game will launch. Season 5 of Warzone will end on October 5th (if patterns hold) and the next season should transition Warzone’s Modern Warfare theme to a Black Ops theme, though I’m still not sure how that will work.
Now, thanks to new leaked modes, we have at least some idea. A new Zombies Royale mode has leaked and it sounds like a blast. It’s part of several new modes dataminers have found in the game’s files:
- Pandemic / Outbreak
- Armored Cargo/Truck Wars
- Plunder: Fire Sale
- Zombies Royale
The mode’s description reads: “Players turn into Zombies on death, but can become human again by consuming fallen player’s hearts.”
So that’s an interesting twist. Players turning into zombies is a great idea for a battle royale game, but being able to turn back into human definitely adds some flavor. I wonder how many times that will be possible.
Presumably the Gulag is turned off for this mode, but if it’s at all like that game mechanic players will only have once respawn. Then again, it could be you can respawn as many times as you like so long as you can consume a human heart before being killed (which is probably pretty difficult since you won’t have a gun and you’ll be competing with other undead for hearts).
In any case, there’s no indication of when this mode will go live. Maybe it’ll land this weekend after the big Cold War reveal, or maybe it’s being saved for Season 6 in October, which would make more sense in my humblest of opinions.
Don’t forget to drop in to Verdansk tomorrow for the big Black Ops — Cold War reveal. See you in the Warzone, young padawans.
