Donald Glover released his final album as Childish Gambino, Bando Stone and the New World, on Friday
Is Childish Gambino a zombie? Possessed? On Monday, the musician released the video for Bando Stone‘s “Lithonia” — and while it starts unassuming, it takes a terror-filled turn in the end.
The video opens with a closeup of Gambino, wearing glasses, a T-shirt, and shorts, singing the track into a mic in front of a small crowd. As the song progresses, Gambino’s eyes widen, and those in the crowd slowly become more and more drenched in sweat.
“Cody LaRae/He had a break/He’s findin’ out/That nobody gives a fuck,” Gambino sings in the chorus. “I did my job/I paid my dues/Love is for fools/’Cause nobody gives a fuck.”
The video ends with a horror-filled twist: Gambino’s eyes explode mid-performance onto a concertgoer’s face before Gambino is seen chasing the screaming attendee (played by Suzanna Son) through a forest.
The new video comes just a few days after Childish Gambino released his sixth and final album, Bando Stone and the New World. The LP featured collaborations with Yeat, Flo Milli, Jorja Smith, and Foushée.
“The soundtrack forces the audience to participate in a way that I don’t feel like most things force you to participate. It forces you to have an imagination,” he told Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1. “All of that stuff allows you to have to participate, which a lot of stuff doesn’t ask you to do, which is why I think a lot of stuff feels flat.”
The musician will also bring the album on the road during his New World Tour later this year, which he teased is “made for arena rock” and meant to be played live. He’ll start his tour on Aug. 11 in Oklahoma. “If this live show isn’t the best live show you’ve ever seen by the first song, you can have your money back,” Glover said.
