Could Ryan Mason be given the Tottenham Hotspur job on a permanent basis?

Since José Mourinho was given his marching orders by Tottenham Hotspur on April 19th, just days before their crucial Carabao Cup final against Manchester City, questions have been asked on who is going to take the hotseat in North London on a permanent basis this summer.

Former Spurs midfielder Ryan Mason was sworn in at short notice and given the opportunity to steady the ship between now and the end of the season. It was a decision that certainly raised eyebrows, especially with his lack of experience and the cup final just around the corner, and whilst many fans of the club have a lot of admiration for Mason, we’re sure they’d like to see someone with a bit more experience take the role during the summer months.

RB Leipzig’s head coach Julien Nagelsmann was tipped to be Spurs’ chairman Daniel Levy’s prime target. However, Bayern Munich were quick to snap up the 33-year-old, leaving Brendan Rodgers, Scott Parker and Nuno Espírito Santo as the favourites for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium hotseat.

There’s no doubt that with Mauricio Pochettino and Mourinho both now sacked within the last 18 months or so, the next manager to take charge of the side needs to be the right man for the role. Having done well with Ajax over the last few years, ten Hag is an exciting prospect, but perhaps giving Mason the permanent position could be more rewarding for the club.

Ex-players taking the reins at their former clubs is a trend picking up a bit of pace in the world of football. Ole Gunnar Solskjær at Manchester United is a prime example of how it can work given time. It was certainly a rocky start to his managerial career at Old Trafford, but the club now look like they are back on an upward trajectory, and the Premier League odds are definitely back in their favour.

Saying that, the pressure on Mason’s shoulders would be a lot lighter as the demands at Manchester United are much higher than those at Spurs. The early signs of the 29-year-old’s time in charge of the North London club are good. In just his second day in the role, Tottenham came from behind to beat Southampton 2-1 at home, ending a drought of three games without a win.

Then there was the aforementioned Carabao Cup final against Manchester City. It was a match Spurs were expected to lose, and they were perhaps lucky to be beaten just 1-0 by Pep Guardiola’s side. Mason then made it two Premier League wins from as many outings with a 4-0 win over the relegated Sheffield United.

His former Spurs teammate Gareth Bale bagged a hat-trick in the game before the Son Heung-min added his 16th goal of the season late in the second half. Spurs still look likely to miss out on the top four, as they trail Chelsea by five points, but a place in next season’s Europa League is back on the cards and Europe’s secondary competition is better than nothing.

It’s reported that senior figures in the Spurs dressing room have been impressed with Mason, namely Tottenham captain Harry Kane, who came through the youth ranks at the club alongside the 29-year-old, whilst Levy has also liked what he has seen thus far.

There’s no doubt that Spurs’ hierarchy need to evaluate their options come the end of the season. There is certainly a lot to reflect on from this campaign and plenty to consider going forward.

However, should Mason keep up the good results between now and the season’s conclusion later this month, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be in the running alongside the likes of ten Hag, Rodgers and Nuno.
