Court Documents: Kim Kardashian Files for Divorce From Kanye West

Kim Kardashian is officially moving on. The 40-year-old Keeping Up With the Kardashians star has filed for divorce from husband Kanye West on Friday, February 19, according to court documents obtained by Heavy. “Sources familiar with the filing but not authorized to speak publicly confirmed that Kardashian filed for divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court,” the Associated Press reported.

TMZ reported that Kardashian, “is asking for joint legal and physical custody of the couple’s four kids.” Sources told the news outlet that West has agreed to coparent with a joint custody agreement and that the couple signed a prenup before getting married. The two, “are already far along in reaching a property settlement agreement,” per TMZ.

Kimye became official in April 2012, and the two got married at a lavish wedding ceremony in May 2014. The Kardashian-Wests share four children together, North West, 7, Saint West, 5, Chicago West, 2, and Psalm West, 20 months.

The divorce filing follows reports that, “divorce is imminent” for Kardashian and West, a source told Page Six in early January. Kardashian has hired celebrity divorce attorney Laura Wasser.

“It’s gotten to the point where they haven’t spent time together as a married couple in months,” a source told E! News in January. “They’ve seen each other for the sake of the kids but have been living separately. Kim knows the marriage is over. She’s known for a while.”

Kardashian & West Sparked Divorce Rumors Over the Last Year

Kimye divorce rumors circulated throughout 2020 and 2021. The two have been in marriage counseling, according to TMZ. Sources told the news outlet that Kardashian and West’s marriage has been in trouble, “for the last half of 2020.” Kardashian was waiting for the right time to file for divorce, given West’s mid-2020 bipolar disorder episodes, sourced told TMZ.

The celebrity duo took a family trip to West’s home in Wyoming in August, per TMZ. Sources told the news outlet that the couple took a private family vacation to try and make their family work.

The trip may not have been successful, as a source told People in December that Kardashian and West, “very much live separate lives.” The source continued saying, “Kim has work and projects that are important to her, and Kanye has his. Their lives don’t overlap much.”

Another source echoed that sentiment, telling Us Weekly in December that the two, “had a big fight” in December 2020. “Kanye blew up at Kim and she was really upset,” the source said at the time. “Things between them don’t seem to have healed since that.”

Kardashian & West Have Both Dealt With Marital Issues Differently

Since news initially broke that the parents have been struggling in their marriage, both stars have struggled with the news. “Kanye is not doing well,” a source told People in February. “He is anxious and very sad. He knows that the marriage is over, and there’s nothing that can be done right now. He also knows what he is losing in Kim.”

Another source told Us Weekly that West was, “less than thrilled” about Keeping Up With the Kardashians portraying their relationship issues for their final season. A source close to West told Page Six in January that West does not want to live the Kardashian lifestyle anymore. West, “Is completely over the entire family … He wants nothing to do with them,” adding he eventually found their reality show “unbearable.”
