Everything You Need to Know about Wonder Woman 1984

One of the most hotly anticipated movies of 2020 was finally released this winter, as moviegoers starved of new productions were finally gifted Wonder Woman 1984, which was released on stream for all to watch and enjoy. If you’re into your superhero movies, love a film with a badass female lead, or simply want to watch a new release this winter, then this article will share with you all that you need to know about this wonderful action-packed film.

What’s with the Name?

Plenty of people get the reference, but in case you don’t, the film’s setting in 1984 refers to George Orwell’s book of the same title. Orwell’s 1984 is written in a dystopian future in which everyone is being watched by a super-powerful state which punishes citizens for thinking certain thoughts. It’s one of the most powerful books against totalitarianism ever written and now it’s up to Wonder Woman to take apart a similar system.

DC Universe

In case you were wondering, Wonder Woman is a DC kind of girl. That means she’s part of an extended universe which has already released 8 movies. This ninth installment takes place in the DCEU (that’s the DC Extended Universe to you and I) and follows up on the 2017 Wonder Woman film, which was a roaring success at the box office. Indeed, as shows Cash Lady analysis shows, DC films have been wildly popular in the superhero movie genre for the past two decades.

Villains

This is a cold war kind of drama, so naturally there’s references to the Soviet Union and the evil of communism throughout. Wonder Woman is an all-American kind of hero, so this film is very much a battle of ideologies as well as a battle of heroes versus villains. Still, this time Wonder Woman is fighting an eccentric and exciting couple of enemies in Maxwell Lord and Cheetah. There’s only spoilers to mention after this point, but rest assured it’s an exciting set-up that builds to a fantastic final fight.

Filming and Release

Of course, as you’d expect, this year hasn’t been a wonderful year for cinema. In fact, it’s been terrible, with many cinemas permanently closed as reported by CNBC, and hundreds of films on delayed release in order to avoid dreadfully low box office statistics. Nonetheless, Wonder Woman has broken from this year’s convention by going ahead and publishing, something that critics and fans alike are grateful for. The film was officially released on December 15th, 2020. The filming, which took place on Tenerife and in parts of the UK, took place just before the virus struck the world.

New Features

As with all DC movies, you should keep your eyes peeled for new additions to their comic book universe. The idea in all these movies is that they overlap and interplay and that they’ll all build to a crescendo as time goes on. That means you should be able to spot some exciting signs of development in both the characters and the universe — if you look closely enough.

There you have it: a complete guide to Wonder Woman 1984, out now across the world.
