Hartalika Teej festival is marked by fasting, prayers, and colourful rituals. Women fast from sunrise to sunset for a happy married life

Hartalika Teej, observed every year on the Shukla Paksha Tritiya of the Bhadrapada month, will be celebrated on Friday, September 6 this year. Hartalika Teej is marked by the formation of Brahma Yoga, Shukla Yoga, and Ravi Yoga which are considered significant in astrology and have a highly positive impact on one’s life.

On the occasion of Teej, married women consume Sargi during the Brahma Muhurta to observe the ‘Nirjala’ fast. This fast will be observed without food and water from sunrise today to sunrise on September 7.

There are two Muhurtas for the worship of Hartalika Teej: one in the morning and one in the evening. On this day, women fast and perform rituals to receive blessings from Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Married women pray for marital joy, prosperity, well-being, and the longevity of their husbands. Young women also observe this fast to attract their desired life partner.

According to astrologer Pandit Rakesh Pandey of the Maharshi Parashar Jyotish Sansthan Trust, there are specific muhurat (auspicious times), vrat (fast) rules, worship methods, and aartis to be followed while observing Hartalika Teej.

Haritalika Teej Auspicious Timing

This time Tritiya Tithi aligns with Chaturthi Tithi, which is extremely pure and auspicious. Dwitiya Tithi is for ancestors and Chaturthi Tithi is dedicated to children. On Teej, the Hasta Nakshatra is followed by the Chitra Nakshatra.

  • Start of Bhadrapad Shukla Tritiya: September 5, Thursday, at 12:21 PM
  • End of Bhadrapad Shukla Tritiya: September 6, Friday, at 3:01 PM
  • Morning Puja Timing: From 06:02 AM to 8:33 AM
  • Evening Puja Timing: After 06:36 PM
  • Brahma Muhurat: From 04:30 AM to 05:16 AM
  • Abhijit Muhurat: From 11:54 AM to 12:44 PM
  • Labh-Uttam Muhurat: From 07:36 AM to 09:10 AM
  • Amrit-Sarvottam Muhurat: From 09:10 AM to 10:45 AM
  • Shubh-Uttam Muhurat: From 12:19 PM to 01:53 PM

Three Auspicious Yogas on Hartalika Teej:

  • Ravi Yoga: From 9:25 AM on Friday to 6:02 AM on Saturday
  • Shukla Yoga: From morning on Friday till 10:15 AM
  • Brahma Yoga: From 10:15 AM on Friday till midnight

Hartalika Teej 2024 Puja Preparation:

For the Hartalika Teej celebration, essential items include idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, which are to be placed on a wooden platform. Red and yellow cloth is used to cover the platform. Sixteen types of ornaments are required to decorate the deities.

A book containing the Hartalika Teej Vrat Katha and aarti are essential for worship. Additional items include kumkum, sindoor (vermilion), bel leaves, bhang, and dhatura for offerings. Other things like incense, a lamp, Gangajal, Naivedya (offering of food), perfume, sweets, cow milk, and curd are prepared for the puja.

A Kalash (sacred water pitcher) adorned with mango leaves, flowers, and garlands should also be in front of the idols. Banana plants, coconuts, sandalwood, durva (holy grass), honey, ghee, betel leaves, betel nuts, sacred thread, and camphor are needed to complete the ritual of Teej celebration.

Hartalika Teej 2024 Puja Procedure:

The Hartalika Teej fast is observed without drinking water or eating food or fruits. This fast lasts from sunrise on Teej to sunrise on Chaturthi, totaling 24 hours. In the evening, decorate the home with Toran (decorative hangings).

Devotees should use clay idols or pictures of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva for the Teej Puja at the courtyard of the house. They should install the idol and place a Kalash (sacred water pitcher) in front of the idols for Puja in the afternoon, and perform the Puja during Pradosh kaal, which is after sunset.

Devotees should offer five clothes to Lord Shiva and three clothes, along with all sixteen traditional ornaments, to Goddess Parvati. Married women should listen to the Hartalika Teej Vrat Katha and perform the Aarti for Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva.

Devotees should stay awake throughout the night on Friday. On September 7, they should take a bath in the morning, perform the daily puja, and give donations (Dakshina) to brahmins and complete the fast with prayers.
